Last summer I was exploring some trails off a bike path in town and discovered this old abandoned quarry. After a chat and some inspiration courtesy of Emmy, Saturday afternoon Darling Boy and I bundled up, ’cause it’s only about 20 degrees F today, and headed over there, camera by my side.

This isn’t a field, the quarry is filled with water and it’s frozen over. This was DB’s first experience walking out on a frozen pond.  He was nervous at first, but after dear old dad jumped up and down on it a few times, he was reassured that the ice was thick enough.  “Dad, you weigh like 3 times as much as me! I guess I’ll be okay.”  Thanks son….

As the seasons change, I’m sure that there will be plenty more photographic opportunities here and this won’t be the only time this location is the target of my camera.

Looks like an interesting place… but I have to say my favourite out of all the shots is the shot of the shadows.

BTW… good idea to place your name on your photos

Liked the graffiti picture! Also the second one with the trees and light shining through them. Very nice.

Your story kinda makes me feel like a whiner about our little 1/2 inch of snow. I love the shadow one! Happy Sunday!

T- thanks, I’m glad you like them!

Emmy- There is actually a LOT of graffiti there, I get the impression the old quarry has long been a teenage hangout, so someday I’ll go back and take pics of some of the graffiti. Darling Boy and I were walking across the ice when I looked to the right and saw the sun shining through the trees, inspiring that shot.

Geek Girl- thank you, I’m enjoying it too!

Minority Report- I tried to just get my son’s shadow, mine is blended in with the tree’s shadows.

Vic- Knowing where you live, I can understand your whining about a little snow ;-)

Great shots Hubman and it also sounds like you guys had a great day too. Just adds to the joy of it.

I also like the grafiti shot. It’s odd because I’m pretty much a nature girl and a big part of me gets pissed when I see idiotic “dumbass wuz here” type tags. But artistically I like the visual interest and humanity it injects into a scene or location.

Some of the graffiti is actually really well done! One of these days, when it’s not snow covered, I’ll get back there for more pics.

I love the shadow pic. And think honey since dude knows he weighs around 60 pounds, that means he thinks you weigh about 180.

Beautiful! It’s cold enough here for me to really appreciate snow pictures now.

    Hi Hubman,

Here is a link for some nice tips for taking pictures of snowy compositions.

Hope you do not mind me giving you tips, I certainly do not want to sound I am bragging (I couldn’t, I am a n00b as well).

I don’t mind at all! Why waste my time getting nowhere, screwing around with settings on my camera, when I can get some advice to help me out? So thanks!

Wow. I don’t envy you the 20F (seriously, how do you people *live* back there?!) But the frozen pond thing is cool.

    I’m loving your photography project!
