Time for a Change

And to leave Hubmans Hangout behind.

I think.

Okay, not really, I’m just thinking about changing where I’m at on the blogosphere.

Since I migrated Hubmans Hangout from Blogger to WordPress.com on January 4 2009 I’ve been very happy with WordPress, much more so that I was with Blogger.  But I think I’ve outgrown this platform and it’s time to purchase my own domain and move to WordPress.org.

What does that mean for you, my (hopefully) faithful readers? Not much, except that the url that you bookmark/have in your blogroll/subscribe to in a feed reader would need to be updated.

So why make the move?

WordPress.com doesn’t allow you to edit the code for the template unless you pay for the $15 upgrade, but that would only allow me to edit the CSS code, not any HTML code.  The annual fee to have my blog hosted elsewhere is less than that.

A ton of plug-ins would become available.  WordPress.com-hosted blogs are not compatible with anything that requires Java script, limiting what I can do.

I can post videos, without having to pay a storage space upgrade.  So that would mean home videos ;-)

Of course, there would be some downsides.  The dip in blog traffic wouldn’t be that big of deal- I’d leave this up blog up for a while and have it automatically redirect to the new URL, plus I expect some of my blog friends would help publicize my move. At least, I hope they would, if I asked nicely :-)

My biggest concern would be migrating all of the content from this blog to the new one.  I have 465+ posts, almost 6000 comments, over 500 uploaded pictures, etc.  I’d hate to buy a domain, get everything set up, only to learn that not everything comes over when I export the content of this blog to the new domain.

Oh, I just thought of something else- what would happen with all of the permalinks?  Yikes!

Does anyone have any experience with moving from WordPress.com to WordPress.org and can help answer some questions for me? I’d greatly appreciate it!

Obviously, I have a bit to think about before I commit to making this change…

    I am on wordpress.org and to be honest, I am no help. It is way too fancy but I know that there are several Media options and you can do your own coding. I was hoping to do voice uploading….but can’t figure it out…..

    I’ve been with Blogger since the start, so I’ve got no experience in this. Good luck to you though. You know I’ll be happy to help get the word out when you change urls.

    Talk to AAG. She is doing this for various other bloggers as well – and she was offering a deal, but I don’t know how long that is going on.

    Thanks for posting about you playing single. I agree this leaves out something vis-a-vie swinging. I once had two playmates both married to non swingers and these affairs were under the radar so to speak. SW knew of these and also had a married male who visited when I was out of town. We both knew in advance when the other would play and shared our adventure afterwards. While it was great fun and we both enjoyed these playmates after about a year we mutually decided to stick to couple swinging. Part of this was due to the two females being straight and would not consider a threesome. However, we did have threesomes with the male.

    That’s a lot of content to move. When I made my archives blog, Blogger actually makes it pretty easy, except try as I might, I never could get the comments to transfer. Posts and pictures were a snap, but the comments kept coming up empty. WordPress is undoubtedly completely different, so hopefully you’ll have better luck.

    It will be pretty cool having your own domain name and complete control, though.

    All the info you need to know on how to move is on the web to find for free! ;) Or I’m sure you’ve got twitter & blogger friends more than happy to pass on their also free advice.

    I’m a very visual person so the moment I found out that the free WP didn’t allow me to tweak the themes, I passed it right on by.

    AAG just moved me lock stock and barrel from Blogger to WordPress.org. She did manage to move a lot of my comments, but not all of them and it wasn’t cost-effective to try for any more.

    It was quick, easy and pretty painless, thanks to all her efforts. Worth every penny! And, as Margaret said, she was doing a special deal, so worth contacting her.

    Many of my lovely friends have updated their links and readers, although I lost a few because those bloggers are not writing any more. Fortunately, lovely new friends like you and Veronica have helped to fill the void.

    The main problem I have had is with some of the directories. Youporn, despite repeated email requests are still linked to the old blogger site and feed so I have lost their valuable traffic because my posts are no longer featured in the daily feed. The same with Cunning Linguists.

    Also, once I closed down the blogger site, I’m having to go through and update the links within any of my old posts to other old posts if I want them to work properly.

    I havent tried the video hosting feature yet so I cant comment. But, now that Im getting used to the template and getting out of Blogger mind, it seems very easy to use. The stats thing is very comprehensive and it’s pretty simple to add in widgets.

    I’ll give you an update on my traffic progress next week.

    So far, I like it :)

    Really, you weren’t able to purchase hubmanshangout.com???? That would be the simplest.

    I moved from blogger 5 years ago and then to my own domain (hosted by WP) 4 years ago. Best thing I ever did. :)

    Riff Dog- I’ve done a little research, it looks like the only issue with moving comments is nested comments get messed up. I can live with that.

    Dangerous Lilly- so I’m learning! And there is one particular WordPress.org expert that I have in mind ;-)

    Kittykillkill- I hope my blogger friends will come thru with helping publicize my move, if/when it happens!

    Joanna- thanks for the info, that’s all good to know. I don’t think I’m listed in any directories, so I’m not too worried about that. Though there are a number of links because of my submissions for e[lust] and Pleasurists. Oh well, there will be only so much I can do.

    Vixen- actually, hubmanshangout.com is available and that’s exactly the url I have in mind. I’m glad to hear that it was such a positive move for you, that’s encouraging me!
