There is no post-processing to mess with the colors, this is how drab the sky looked all day Thursday! I’m sooo ready for spring!!

=========================================================================

The camera chain where Veronica bought my DSLR offers free classes with every new camera purchase.  I missed the first class when I was in Florida 2 weeks ago, but due to a scheduling change due to a snowstorm a few weeks ago, the class on Wednesday was the one that I missed!

The class was pretty good, there were just 4 of us, and the instructor really knows his stuff.  The first class was really basic for the most part, going over the basics of the controls, talking about the different types of cameras, etc.  But starting next week, it’s all DSLR-based content and we’ll be working exclusively in the different manual modes.  After 2 weeks of that, there’s a week each for going over quality lighting and filters.

As he was talking about camera modes, he mentioned that Program mode can be thought of as “Auto- light” in that shutter speed and aperture are controlled, but the photographer can change the combination of the 2 that results in the same exposure.  This also gives the photographer access to certain controls that don’t work in any of the Auto modes, such as playing with flash or white balance settings.

One thing the instructor did was challenge us to use program mode more, so starting with the picture of the day you see above, I hope that all of my pictures from here on out will be taking in something other than auto mode!

I have a fantastic camera, it’s time to start taking full advantage of what we can do together!

    You do have a great camera, a Nikon D90 if I remember correctly.
    Go Manual or go home has been my motto since a year ago. I takes more time to actually take the picture but the control you have is awesome. Aperture priority and shutter speed priority are also really good.
    Keep shooting!

      You have a good memory, I do have a D90!

      I like the motto of go manual or go home. I’m getting there, it’s a bit of a learning curve, but that’s my goal eventually!

    I sent Vincent to a photography seminar last year. Three intensive days with some of the bast travel photographers in the business! He had a fantastic time and his already cool photography went up another notch. We still laugh though because learning all of the feature of his camera is truly the most challenging thing!

    Have fun in your classes!

    On, and PS, I swear I’ll never understand how people live in gray weather like that! I’d lose my mind!!

    I too am sick of the grey dreary weather. But the photo looks great and I can’t wait to see what you learn in class.

    I have reason to believe (or to hope) that I’ll be receiving a bit of money from my grandfather’s estate soon. If so, I’m signing up for photography classes. I love seeing what you’re learning and need to get braver about leaving the automatic setting behind on my camera as well.

    Keep having fun up there. I hope your skies get prettier to look at soon. We’re dreary here also lately.

      So far, this one has been well worth it! I don’t know about where you are, but in my area there are a number of adult continuing education providers that have photography classes. It was through one of those that I took the Photoshop class in the fall.

    Glad you are enjoying the class. Might have to have you share what you learn. I feel like I’ve learned a lot but I doubt I’ve scratched the surface.
