Since it was unseasonably chilly Friday evening, the family gathered downstairs and I started a fire.  And decided to take some pictures of the fire.  I’ve decided to do a lot more shooting in full Manual mode and to move away from Program mode.  So it’s probably no surprise then that the first picture was under-exposed, but I really like how it came out!

ISO 200, F/5, 1/125th sec

I messed around with the settings on the camera and decided I wanted to try to capture the flames in a blur, so I slowed down the shutter time, but also bumped up the ISO slightly

I like how I inadvertently caught my  reflection in the bottom of the image.

ISO 400, F/4.5, 1 sec

I often dial through several settings before I get to what I’m looking for. I’m also in that transition phase- from Program to Manual!- so when dialing through my photos from the night you’ll see dark & underexposed, and slowly things will brighten up again. A learning experience all around, I can’t wait until I can turn my camera on and just know how to set it!

13- thanks, I thought so too!

Jaartel- hah, no pun intended, right?

Livia- yeah, me too! I think that just dialing in the correct settings on the first try is a long ways off for me. But I’m working on it!

I actually really like the first pic, under-exposed or not.
I wasn’t sure at first if it was an outdoor or indoor fire… maybe I just enjoy the mystery? :)

Have fun playing with your settings. I know I do!
    (on my camera I mean)

Sometimes some of the Greatest shots come out not the way we intended. Nice captures!

Notice the metadata at the bottom of the pictures, great. Thanks for sharing that!
