On Sunday Ronnie James Dio, former lead singer of Black Sabbath (replacing Ozzy Osbourne, no less) and lesser know bands such as Elf and Rainbow, passed away at the age of 67 from stomach cancer. Sometime in the fall of 1985, during his solo career he was the first act I ever saw live in concert.
Hang on, rough transition ahead, but bear with me, it’ll come back together at the end!
I remember an old TMI Tuesday question, something about oddest places that you’ve ever had sex. In 1990, I was working at the campus radio station and Veronica and I had just started dating. On Saturday afternoons we broadcast the school’s football games (we were just a D3 school, so they let a bunch of amateurs like us broadcast the game on our little 250W station!) and my job was to run the control board, monitor the transmitter, etc, while the broadcast team did their thing from on-site. Basically I was the producer. Veronica would often come visit me to help pass the time. And fool around
One day, we got the bright idea that if we timed it right coming out of a break and I locked the station door, we could have a quickie in the record library. The record library was a room off to the side of the broadcast studio, filled floor-to-ceiling with thousands of LPs. The break ends, the broadcast team takes over and Veronica and I go into the record library and get down to business, fucking on my jacket which I had laid down on the linoleum floor. I know, I’m a classy guy, try not to be jealous ladies, lol…
And here is where Ronnie James Dio and Veronica and I fucking in a radio station intersect
The play-by-play man calling the football game? Dio’s son.
