Surreal Radio

I’ve done a LOT of searching up and down the radio dial over the last several days.  Rock, Top 40, alternative, country, I’ve listened to it quite a variety in music.  Okay, maybe not country, but anyway…

Saturday afternoon somewhere in the vicinity of Montgomery, Alabama I hear Dance Hall Days by Wang Chung.  Remember them?  Kind of a catchy song, so due to a lack of options, I leave the song on.  The song ends and what do I hear?

Casey Kasem.

Casey Kasem, the host of American Top 40?  I had no idea that the show was still on the air or that he was still hosting it.  But Wang Chung? That was 1984 or something like that, what’s going on here?

Then he introduces the next song on the countdown- “and here she is with her latest hit, it’s Madonna and “Borderline”"

Now this is just weird.  The next song?  “Infatuation” by Rod Stewart.  Mind you, there has been NOTHING from the host station yet, I have no idea what I’m listening to, it’s like I’m in some time warp and I’m a pimply-faced socially awkward 8th grader all over again *shudder*.  Anyway, it’s strange enough that I pull over at a rest area and send out a few tweets.  The responses to my tweets were pretty amusing:

13Messages- I love that year in pop music. My formative years! :-)

brlatethanneve- that’s horrifying!

queenofpink- I’d be in heaven.  There is no music like it.  Instantly transports you back to where you were.

VeronicaASM- that is so awesome.

Now I’m getting curious and really want to know when this list is from, until finally I hear a mention of July 7th, 1984.  I was right about that year!  This list goes on, Deniece Williams, ZZ Top, Huey Lewis and the News, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Idol…

And then I lose the signal for the station!  Dammit, now I care, I want to know what the top 5 songs were for this week in 1984!

oh well, back to surfing the dial for a station I like.  But it was fun while it lasted!

Oh, you ought to get XM Radio.. It’s an eternal blast from the past!!
Nothing like listening to the stuff you ‘connected with’ in those wonderful years!! :) :)

I must be really bored, but I went on Billboard.com. The Top 5 were #1 When Doves Cry(Prince), #2 Dancing In The Dark(Bruce Springsteen), #3 Jump For My Love(Pointer Sisters), #4 Self Control(Laura Branigan), and #5 The Reflex(Duran Duran). Apparently Prince is wrong, the internet is not dead. Safe journey!

I found a station like that but it was a DJ from this day and age. I was on a road trip when I found it and listened to it for a couple hours until signal was lost. I love the 80′s music.

There’s an app for that! Bing makes an app that let’s you hear the top 100 songs of any given year. ;)

Well I was only 5 that year (don’t hate me!) but I remember all those songs well and I think I might need to download a few of those gems now!

1984…yeesh…I can still smell the Clearasil and taste the Orange Julius’…I would need serious money to relive my Sophomore year. That and a prescription for psychotropic drugs.(oops…delete that other post will ya? (I couldn’t leave that grammar mistake sitting there looking at me like that…I posted prematurely!lol)

Some of the music I might even CHOOSE to listen to again, but that time frame?? Nope. . . please. . . don’t make me!

Just Me- We had satellite radio in the van we rented for our family road trip a few weeks ago, it was great. But to be honest, 99.9% of the time, regular radio is fine for me.

Scott- thanks for doing the research!

Zen Mom- of course there’s an app for that, there’s an app for everything! At least it seems that way…

    Aurore- youngin’ ;-)

Minority Report- you don’t have to say, I know how old you are!

Beryl- I forgot about Orange Julius!

Btrlatethanneve- I’m with you, no way in hell would I want to go back to that era!

The 80′s was a wonderful musical decade. I wouldn’t want to relive the actual times, but I love to take that trip back down memory lane.
