And I’ve been whining a bit lately!

Ever since I left home for San Antonio, TX 16 days ago, I feel like I’ve been a little negative here and on Twitter, griping about the hotel I’m in for now, the commute, missing my family, the heat, blah blah blah

Enough!

Life is good.  I talk with Veronica every day and see her and the kids on webcam several times per week.  On the way here I meet 4 blogging and Twitter friends (yes, I wrote about just 2 of them, here and here, the others we’ll see what the future holds, they’re both in Texas and I hope to see them again) and there are plans to meet some others as well.

My course is going well.  It’s challenging but not too bad and I’m making some new friends.  The physical training program is also going well, I feel like I’ve lost a little weight and I’m getting in some good rides on my bike.

I’ll be moving much closer to what I’ve been referring to as “work” by the end of next week and both the commute and the living conditions will improve greatly.

I love my kids to death, they mean everything to me.  But you know what? A little break is nice.

The singles dating site where I created a profile last weekend, in an effort to get laid once in a while?  Nothing going on there, but I have no one to blame but myself- my profile could be better and I’ve been passive, sitting back to see what develops.  I need to put more effort into it if I expect anything to develop.  Hmm, maybe I’ll revise my profile and post it here for feedback sometime this weekend…

Four weeks from today, Veronica and I will celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary.  And we get to celebrate it together!!!  Dallas-area friends, she and I are meeting there and we would love to meet you!  She’s been to San Antonio before and frankly isn’t that fond of the town and neither of us has even been to Dallas before, so why not?

In the grand scheme of things, life is pretty damn good and I need to embrace the positive and push the negative aside.

Have a great weekend friends, I know I will!

Friday afternoon I went for a walk along a path I discovered on a bike ride last weekend.  The path is several miles long and one of these days I’ll explore more of it on foot.  This time around I got lucky, I walked no more than 100 yds and I saw this doe and fawn.  There haven’t been many instances where I wished I had a longer lens on my camera, but this was one of them!  I tried to get a little closer but they bolted into the trees as soon as they saw me moving towards them.  Oh well, I still got a pretty good shot!

One of the (many) downsides to living in the hotel is the dining arrangement.  I can eat for free in the cafeteria at work, but on a day like Thursday, when we’re released at 2:30, it’s not exactly worth it to make the 12 mile round trip back for cafeteria food in the evening.

The alternative? Dine out, which gets expensive after a while, or dine in.  Thursday’s culinary delight? 4-cheese pizza Hot Pockets.

I can’t wait to move out of the hotel and into lodging near work next week….

I find myself taking 2 or 3 showers a day down here, I’m sweating so damn much.

But have no fear, my mind is as dirty as ever, some things will never change!

*Click-click* for one from the archives…

Veronica is so good to her readers- even though I’m not there to take a picture of her for HNT, she’s got something anyway.  She asked me to send her some pictures from the archives, I hope you like what I sent her!

Happy HNT!

Yes, I have not one, not two, but THREE laptops in my hotel room.  Why?

Front and center is my personal computer, my Macbook Pro that I got a few months ago.  I couldn’t imagine going without it.

The Dell on the right is my work computer that I brought with me.  But there’s a problem- it’s basically useless right now.  It’s configured so that the wireless card is only enabled when it’s not connected to a LAN.  Except I’m not connected to a LAN in my hotel room and the wireless card isn’t working.  Until I move out of the hotel and into the other lodging arrangement that has a LAN, I can’t check my work e-mail (encryption issues).

The Dell on the left?  Guess what they didn’t tell us- every student would be issued a computer for the course!  Unfortunately, while the wireless card does work in that one, it’s configured to only recognize the router at the schoolhouse or to work on a LAN.  So just like my work computer, it’s useless in my hotel room.

Just another reason why I can’t wait to get out of this hotel and into better housing arrangements for the remainder of my time here…

I saw this on Ashly’s tumblr, she got it from somewhere else, so who knows where it started.  Anyway, I like the questions, so here goes…

1. What is your first name?

It’s not “Hubman” ;-)

2. Were you named after anyone?

Not that I know of!

3. Do you wish on stars?

Maybe when I was a kid, but not anymore.

4. When did you last cry?

The other day I shed a tear or two, I’m really missing my kids.  12 days down, 62 more until I see them again…

5. Do you like your handwriting?

It’s legible enough, but not particularly “nice”, but it works for me.

6. What is your favorite lunch meat?

Either ham or turkey breast

7. What is your most embarrassing CD?

Can I blame this one on Veronica?  She’s the one who bought it! There’s a CD burned to my iTunes collection called Pure ’80s, all sorts of embarrassing stuff, Eurythmics, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Animotion, Stray Cats, Duran Duran…

8. If you were another person would you be friends with you?

I think I’m a reasonably nice guy and a good person to be friends with, so I hope so!

9. Do you have a journal?

Do you mean besides this blog?

10. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Who me? Of course not! ;-)

11. Would you bungee jump?

I think so, I’m looking for the chance to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, so why not try bungee jumping too!

12. What are your nicknames?

Hubman, Literal Man, Sexy Tiger likes to call me Sweet Cheeks (apparently she likes my ass!), and Veronica has an assortment of nicknames for me, but those are between the two of us!

13. Do you untie your shoes before you take them off?

My work shoes yes, can’t get them off otherwise, sneakers, I usually don’t.

14. Do you think that you are strong?

Not as strong as I was in my younger days, but I’m no weakling either

10 1/2 or 11, depending on the shoe

17. Red or pink?

Doesn’t matter to me

I’m not sending it to anyone.  If you like the questions and want to use them on your blog, go for it!

28. Do you like the person who sent this to you?

Ashly didn’t send this to me, but I do happen to like her, she seems like a really good kid (no offense Ashly, but you are 15 yrs younger than me!) and she’s one of the people I hope to meet while I’m in the great state of Texas.

Non-alcoholic, probably diet pepsi, alcoholic drinks I prefer beer or Captain and coke.

30. Favorite sport?

Football and baseball, though I generally watch a lot of sports.

The classic old-fashioned ringing phone, nothing special

Signs like this one are posted around the hotel parking lot and I’ve also seen them around town and on billboards.  I guess there is a bit of a burglary problem here in San Antonio.  But really, do people really need to be told this?

Now this sign just annoys me.  It’s on the side of the hotel, near the sign shown above.  As far as I know, if someone breaks into my truck (well, not my truck, I’m careful not to leave anything valuable in it!), whatever they take isn’t “lost”, it’s “stolen”.

And this is why Veronica refers to me as literally man…

A really old drill!

The Alamo Quarry Market is built at the site of the old Alamo Cement Plant and the main building now houses a 16 screen cinema, a bookstore and a health club.  Across the street there is now a golf course IN the quarry where they used to mine the limestone for the cement plant.  One of these days I’ll have to try to get some pictures of the golf course, it’s pretty cool to see.

Anyway, around the Market grounds are some old pieces of mining equipment, such as this drill.  Click on the picture to see the placard describing what the drill was used for.
