The weather was really nice Wednesday evening, especially for this late in September, so I spent some quiet time sitting out on the deck

Veronica is taking a blogging hiatus this week, but you can see a little of her in my post yesterday, we celebrated 20 yrs since we met.  Osbasso has the list of the rest of the half-nekkid people and of course there’s The Other HNT.

Happy Half-Nekkid Thursday!!

Not only did I get a pretty good photo for my Project365 but walking to this location,
I think I found a spot for Veronica and I to fool around outdoors :-)

20 years ago today, on September 29, 1990, Veronica and I met at a party.

Less than 2 weeks after that fateful meeting, we fucked for the first time. And the second. And the third. And the fourth… ;-)

And we haven’t stopped since!

Tuesday evening Veronica went to a Pilates class at the gym then returned to work for a committee meeting, leaving me with Mr Mom responsibilities.  Due to popular demand, it was breakfast for dinner- pancakes!  Of course, PP wanted miniature ones, because that’s what mommy makes for her…

Here is part of a conversation that took place on Twitter on Monday afternoon:

NippleCharms: Can you be a swinger and conservative? I just had some emails and questions. What is everyone’s opinion?

Hubman38: @nipplecharms I have trouble envisioning a “conservative” swinger. Conservative how, though…

NippleCharms: @hubman38 @lordbeazley politically conservative and a swinger sexually. is it possible?

Hubman: @nipplecharms I equate politically conservative with socially/sexually conservative, so I would say no. But maybe I’m wrong…

Hubman: @lordbeazley I can’t think of a single swinger friend who identifies as politically conservative. How about you? @nipplecharms

==========================================================================

What do you think, dear reader, am I wrong to generalize this way?

Here’s what I’m thinking.  When I hear “conservative” I think of an emphasis on a “traditional” family structure, less acceptance of homosexuality and gay marriage, an opposition to abortion, etc.

Anyone see an acceptance of multiple partners, group sex or bi-sexuality in any of that?

Obviously whenever we generalize about a group, there are exceptions that prove us wrong.  But thinking about the swingers that Veronica and I have known, intimately or not, I can’t think of any who I would call “conservative”.  Are some of them fiscally conservative?  Sure, after all, that’s how I would describe myself.  Are some of them advocates of smaller government/less taxes/deregulation, etc?  Again, I can see that.  But conservative on social issues and swingers?  I have trouble envisioning that.

I maintain that the following individual does not exist:
- is a swinger/in an open marriage
- is pro-life
- is anti-gay marriage
- is a devout member of a Judeo-Christian faith

Go ahead, someone prove me wrong, that’s what the comment box is for!

Not camera lenses, contact lenses!  In June I went to the optometrist to have my eyes checked, since it seemed like my vision was getting worse.  Turns out I was right, the doc increased the strength of my prescription from -3.50 to -4.00 for both eyes :-(   I received 3 pairs of lenses to get me started and a prescription to order more.  Unfortunately I forgot about actually ordering lenses before I left for Texas, but I finally took care of that on Monday evening!

While the lack of encounters is partially my fault, its hard to listen to him talk about going out and having fun with a hot chick, while I’ve been doing laundry and helping someone with the finer points of wiping
I saw that in a chat between Veronica and a mutual friend and thought “oh crap”
I’ve written before about how sometimes I feel a little guilty that I’ve had more solo fun than she has.  That’s been due a combination of my work-related travel (and the opportunities that presents) and her honest lack of desire to play with others without me.  But sometimes the little voice of doubt speaks up and then gets quite loud when I see something like what she wrote.
So I sent her an e-mail:
Hi sweetie,
I was in your e-mail and looking at chats, since you mentioned blah blah blah and noticed this line:

“While the lack of encounters is partially my fault, its hard to listen to him talk about going out and having fun with a hot chick, while I’ve been doing laundry and helping someone with the finer points of wiping”

I asked you several times, most likely after each time I saw someone, if everything was okay with you, and each time you assured me that it was.  Is there anything we need to talk about?  If you weren’t comfortable with me playing with others while I was away, I wish you would have said something.
love you!
me
She quickly replied:
I was comfortable with you seeing people, I was just kind of sad and feeling sorry for myself when I wrote that as I had had a rough day with work and the kids.

If I didn’t want you to see people I would have said something.

A short while later we spoke on the phone (this was during the day and we were both at work) and she reaffirmed that the chat with our friend took place after a frustrating day at work followed by another evening of solo-parenting 2 kids and that I had nothing to worry about, that she was, and continues to be, perfectly comfortable with my playing with others.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- open and honest communication is the key to a successful open relationship!

It’s been over 5 months since we last wrote a Swing Shift column and while I didn’t set out for this to become one, it seemed appropriate after I drafted it.
Thoughts, comments, suggestions for future Swing Shift columns?  Don’t be shy, we’d be happy to resurrect Swing Shift if there’s interest!

Yesterday morning I posted a few tweets with the hashtag #hubonwheels, which lead some to think I was referring to myself.  However I was referring to a cycling event held in Boston, the Hub on Wheels ride (10, 25, and 50 mile routes) and the Mayor’s Cup, a professional cycling race.  When I first heard about the event I thought about doing the 50 mile ride, but then had the idea of asking DB if he’d like to do the 10 mile ride with me.  He was up for it, so that’s what we did!

Keep in mind that DB only learned to ride a 2-wheeler in July of last year, so for him to do a 10 mile ride (which turned out to be 12, plus another 2 miles to and from the start), along with several thousand other riders on city streets was pretty impressive.  He got a little tired and whiny 7 miles in, but when we got to 8.5 miles I told him that we started strong, so we should try to finish strong too.  I was really proud of his response- he overlooked any discomfort and tiredness he was feeling and finished with a smile on his face!

Along Storrow Dr, I told him that I wanted to sprint ahead of him, pull my SLR out of my backpack and get some pics of him riding along.  This is one of my favorites, at least that I can show here!

This week’s Sunday Stealing was brought to you by The Ramblings of a Marine Wife. I guess that you’re supposed to tag people, but I’m not going to bother.  Steal it if you’d like, that’s what I did!

1. Where are you from?

Long Island, NY, though I haven’t lived anywhere in NY since 1992.

2. If you could live any place in the world, where would you live?

I haven’t seen too much of the world (yet), so I’ll have to stick with somewhere in US.  Veronica said Coronado Island, which sounds nice, I think Virginia or the Carolinas would be good too.

3. What’s your favorite blog? I’ll check them out of course!

Besides my wife’s, Ivey Lane is one of my favorite reads, among several others.

4. What is your biggest blogging pet peeve?

People who complain about the lack of traffic and comments on their blog, yet never both to comment on other peoples blogs.  You get out of blogging what you put into blogging!  That and anyone who has a “donate” button on their sidebar, like Blogger fuckin’ costs them something.  Need more money? Spend less time on-line and find a better job!

5. What’s your favorite TV show this season? I need a new show! :)

I just discovered Glee this past week and was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it. I saw an episode of Castle when I stayed at my mom’s recently, I’d give that another shot as well.

6. What’s your favorite ‘down’ time {nothing computer related}?

It involves Veronica and a lack of clothes ;-)

7. Are you a parent? If so, what’s your favorite thing to do with your children?

I am! If you didn’t already know, DB is our 10 yr old son and PP is our 4 yr old daughter.  DB and I enjoy our bike rides together, any time spent alone with PP is special, we don’t get a lot of that.

8. What about your blog, have you considered changing?

Oh yeah, one of the reasons I moved to self-hosting back in March was because of the things I wanted to do with my blog that I couldn’t do within the confines of WordPress.com.  Of course, I haven’t done most of it and have a growing wish list of things to do with my blog, half of which I don’t know HOW to do!

9. What do you do for a living (if you work outside the home or if you work at home)?

I’m a biomedical researcher.

10. What is your favorite song at the moment? What is your favorite song ever?

I really don’t know the answer to this one….

11. What is your favorite niche TV channel to watch?

Probably the Discovery Channel

12. If you could have any career, what would it be and why?

I love what I do AND I’m fairly well compensated for what I do, so I can’t say I dislike my career or want another one.  That being said, with my growing interest in photography being a photojournalist sounds like fun.

13. What is your favorite outfit?

This sounds like a chick question to me!  So let’s ask Veronica!

Veronica- I like you in a pair of jeans and your blue and white striped Calvin Klein shirt, and nothing underneath.

14. If you could tell your teenage self something, what would you say?

Relax young man, you may be frustrated by and bumble around the opposite sex, but someday you’re going to have a sex life that is the envy of others!

15. What is your favorite recipe?

I don’t really cook, I assemble.  Veronica is the cook, I love her chicken parm, baked ziti, and chili recipes most of all.

16. What is the funniest joke you’ve ever heard?

I don’t know about the funniest ever, but this one is pretty good!

A man is out shopping and discovers a new brand of condoms—Olympic condoms. Clearly impressed, he buys a pack. Upon getting home, the man informs his wife of his new purchase.

“Olympic condoms?” she asks. “What makes them so special?”

“There are three colors,” he replies. “Gold, Silver and Bronze.”

“What color are you going to wear tonight?” she asks cheekily.

“Gold, of course,” says the man proudly.

The wife responds, “Really, why don’t you wear Silver?”

“Why silver?” asks the man.

“Well, it would be nice if you came second for a change.”

17. What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

Vegas last fall was a blast!  We also had fun in San Diego several years ago, we need to get back there now that we know some Twitter friends in the area that we’d like to meet!

18. What are you most excited about with fall here?

I’m not a big fan of fall, it’s the end of summer, my favorite season.  There’s not much about fall that excites me…

19. Did you envision yourself to be where you are today ten years ago? If not, what did you envision?

Professionally, yes.  Personally, yes and no.  DB was just weeks old, Veronica and I were very happy, yet I’d be a big fat liar if I said I envisioned how our relationship would change (all for the better, by the way!)

20. If money were no object, what would your dream house look like?

Probably a Colonial, plenty of yard space for the kids, wrap-around porch to sit out on, 4 bedrooms (we need an extra for fun and games!), hardwood floors.  And the kitchen of Veronica’s dreams!

21. What is your all-time favorite Disney movie?

So many of the Disney/Pixar films are great, it’s hard to pick a favorite.  I’d have to agree with Veronica and say Up.

22. What blog do you think isn’t getting enough notice?

Being Bella, by my friend Bella, who I had the pleasure of meeting on my way back from Texas, is always a good read. Oh, and she’s sexy as hell and posts pictures from time to time :-)

In some way, it hardly feels like I was gone for 10 weeks.  While Veronica had shared some concerns about an adjustment period when I returned, we settled right back into a normal routine pretty easily.  The kids are used to having more than 1 parent to harass, Veronica is back into her normal routine of going to the gym several times a week and having someone to share in the parenting duties, and believe it or not, we even managed to resume our normal sex life right away ;-)

===================================================================

There have been some odd things though, mostly at work.  Before I left I set the Outlook out-of-office assistant to notify anyone who emailed me where I would be and how long I would be gone.  I have a dry-erase board on the outside of my office door and left a message there as well,  again with where I would be and how long I would be gone.

I swear, some of my co-workers embody the absent-minded professor stereotype!  At least 4 or 5 of them said something along the lines of “hey, haven’t seen you in a while, have you been away?” or “long time no see, what have you been doing?”

Really?

I do have to admit, those people were a distinct minority, most people realized exactly where I was and what I was doing there and wanted to hear all about my time in Texas.  Of course, I couldn’t tell them everything, they don’t need to know about some of my various adventures!

One saving grace was that my boss was on vacation all week.  I really like my boss and he’s been instrumental in my professional development, but I just know he would have driven me nuts this week with pushing me to re-engage with projects I left idle while I was gone.  Without him around I could ease myself back into work, dealing with e-mails, catching up the status of some stuff c0-workers were taking care of for me, etc.

===================================================================

Starting last January I had been seeing a chiropractor for my back, it seemed like my lower back was always bothering me, even first thing in the morning.  The chiropractor definitely helped, but the pain never fully went away.  I felt like the chiropractor was doing a good job, but there were limits to what he could do for me, so I learned to cope with the occasional really sore back.

Whenever I traveled throughout the spring, it seemed like my back was better when I was gone.  I didn’t think too much about it until I got to Texas and my back didn’t bother me all summer.

The culprit?  Our mattress.

In the spring of 2009 we replaced the mattress that we bought sometime in the late ’90s with one of those fancy memory-foam types.  It’s nice and comfy and apparently not supportive enough for me.  As soon as I returned home my lower back issues returned.  Veronica and I will be going mattress shopping sometime this week…

===================================================================

Sunday morning DB and I will be in Boston for a bike ride, the Hub on Wheels event starting at City Hall Plaza.  Several years ago he and I did a 10 mile ride together, but that was when I was still pulling him on his trailer bike.  This time, he’s on his own, riding alongside me.  I hope he enjoys it as much as I will!  I’ll be carrying my SLR in a backpack, so be prepared for pictures tomorrow!
