Today is Veronica’s birthday!

18  years ago, I gave her a mug for her birthday.  Yesterday she accidentally dropped that mug, now it looks like this :-(

I know what you’re thinking, a mug for her birthday, how lame!  And what’s with the saying?

There’s a funny story here, a story about Hubman trying to be clever, but his youthful ignorance getting the best of him…

In the fall of 1992 Veronica and I were living together and finishing up our undergraduate degrees.  I knew that she was “the one” and started shopping for engagement rings.  She had dropped some hints and being a dutiful boyfriend, I listened, so it didn’t take me long to find something.  Then, I decided to get clever and bought the mug you see above.  My plan was to put the ring inside the mug and then wrap it.  She would open her birthday present, there would be the anticipated disappointed reaction, then she’d see the ring and I’d propose to her.

Nice plan, right?

Except for one minor detail.  Rings aren’t one-size-fits-all, are they?  I knew Veronica’s ring size, but I didn’t plan on the week or so it would take for them to re-size the ring and get back to pick it up in time for her birthday.

Her birthday comes, I don’t have the ring yet.  But she’s expecting something, it is her 21st birthday after all, so I just give her the mug.  And there was the anticipated disappointed reaction.  Fortunately a few days later I had the ring, she said yes and forgave me for the crappy birthday present.

The funny thing is, she was actually a little upset when she accidentally broke this silly mug yesterday!

    Very sweet story.

It is super ironic that the mug is *broken* and says what it says…..doh.

That is a completely romantic story, even if the first attempt failed.

Awwww, what a great story. I can’t imagine Veronica not forgiving you. I can understand why she was upset about the mug. It has sentimental value. What did you get her for her birthday this year?

My first proposal was similar. We had been dating for a while and talked about getting married. I had hinted around like V had done with you. Christmas time came and I had gotten him quite a few nice, somewhat expensive gifts. He got me a shirt. I really tried hard to hide my disappointment because it’s not about receiving, right? Well several hours after we had exchanged gifts, his friend came over because we got him a present. After he opened his gift he said to my ex, “Oh, I think you left this at my house” as he pulls a wrapped ring box out of his jacket pocket. My eyes got big and I opened the box. There was nothing in it. They were laughing at me. Then his friend pulled another wrapped ring box out of his other jacket pocket and said, “You left this one, too.” That one actually contained the ring.

Anyway, it’s similar in that I thought all I was getting was a shirt, like V thought she was only getting a mug. I’m sure you figured that out but I thought I should simplify it after writing that long story.

I hope you both enjoy your weekend!

That’s very sweet and it’s one of those gifts that turns out to be a great sentimental thing if the relationship works out. :-)
