There used to be a collection of portraits of the kids on these walls.  We decided to take them down and scan them to go in a digital picture frame instead.  What started as a simple project grew, as is often the case.  After I spackled the holes from the picture hooks, I looked around and realized that the entire hallway area could use repainted…

To reach some of the spots on the wall, I had to maneuver my 12′ extension ladder inside.
It barely fit and was uncomfortably close to vertical, I really wasn’t too happy up there.

During the day I tweeted something along the lines of “Cough cough, I think my palm sander needs a new dust catcher”
See what I was talking about? Our house isn’t normally that dusty, really!

The dog was rather disinterested in my efforts!

A few hours later the paint was dry, I removed the tape around the door and trim molding and hung the picture that my mom and step-dad gave us for Christmas.  Not too bad, if I may say so myself!

And now I’ve done it, I completed my Project365!!!!

My goal was to take a photo every day and publish it the next day and with a few exceptions, I succeeded.  When I went to Ft Lauderdale in February I took so many photos that I spread them out over 3 or 4 days.  There were also a couple of occasions when my photo was taken after midnight, so technically there are probably some days that I didn’t take a photo.  But that’s minor stuff, there are 365 Project365 posts as of today.

Did I accomplish what I set out to do?

I believe I did, I think I’ve become a much better photographer.  My first pictures were taking using Auto mode, basically my DSLR was a glorified point-and-shoot camera.  I’ve gotten to know the camera controls A LOT better and shoot exclusively in Manual mode now.  I’ve also become more mindful of composition and more of the art of what makes a good photograph.

Am I done now?

No I’m not!

Tomorrow starts Project365, Year 2!  More on that tomorrow :-)

First, her favorite

Veronica gave me a list of 14 (!) HNTs from the last year that she really liked.  I pointed out that a list that long wasn’t really helpful and asked if she could narrow it down a bit, to a single one.  After some hemming and hawing on her part, she decided on HNT Mr Mom Edition

Veronica, care to share with us why you chose this particular photo?

While I tease Veronica about her inability to pick just one of my HNTs from the past year, I’ve had the same issue.  Eventually I had it narrowed down to 4 that I really liked and had each open in different tabs in my browser, flipping back and forth and deciding which 1 I liked the best.

I ended up choosing HNT- Reading, for a couple of reasons.  I love the lighting and the shadows, there is a hint of my face (which I don’t show much of very often at all), and frankly, I think I look pretty good!  Sometimes Veronica and I struggle with getting good HNT pictures- I have an image in my mind of what I want, but I fail to adequately communicate that image to her.  This was not one of those times- I just laid there reading and she took a bunch of really good pictures.

For my curious readers, here are the other 3 HNTs I was considering

HNT Nooner Edition- I spent some time with my dear friend Southern Vixen in April (the last time we were together actually, I miss her) and I used the remote to grab this photo as we were relaxing in bed

HNT Souvenir Edition- this was a very close runner up, for the same reasons I like HNT Reading so much.

HNT Morning Light- While I was in TX for the summer Veronica joined me in Dallas for a weekend so we could celebrate our wedding anniversary together. She took these shots on that Sunday morning, shortly before I drove her to the airport for her flight home.

I’m looking forward to browsing what others chose as their favorites, see Osbasso for the list of this weeks half-nekkid people and Veronica’s favorite is here, along with the story behind her Twitter avatar.

First it was PP to the doctor on Tuesday and a diagnosis of a mild case of bronchitis.
Not to be outdone, Veronica went to the doctor on Wednesday and returned with her own bronchitis diagnosis :-(

Tomorrow is Day 365 of my Project 365, I suppose I should do something special to acknowledge meeting my goal…

One of my 3 wishes for HNT last week was for my friend M who blogs at Rumblings and Bumblings to get internet access at home and resume blogging.

Guess what?  She wrote a post today!  Just a little teaser of more to come, but it’s a start!

On top of that, Saucy Wildcat came out of hibernation and posted something for the first time in 6 months!

Two old friends return to the blogosphere on the same day, I’m a happy man.

You know what would make me even happier?  If you clicked on the links to their blogs and welcomed them back.

What are you waiting for? GO!

Princess Persistent loves the pillow pet she got for Christmas.
She also really likes Despicable Me, which we were watching for the 2nd time when this photo was taken.

With the 40 mph+ winds that came with the snowstorm, snow drifts were inevitable.  On one hand, parts of my driveway were practically devoid of snow.  On the other hand parts of my driveway had 2 ft of densely packed snow…

========================================================================

Monday evening I was sitting on the couch and noticed this car in the street down the block a little bit.  I watched it for a few minutes, it was obvious no one was in it, it was just sitting there.  It bothered me enough that I had to get dressed and go outside to see just how much it was blocking the street, since from inside my perspective was off.  Is anyone surprised that I brought my camera outside with me?

Who parks like this?  Oh right, some asshole who thinks the world revolves around him…

Unless you live under a rock or far from the east coast of the United States, you probably know that we got hit with a pretty big storm yesterday and into today.  With the 40 mph+ wind gusts and drifting snow it’s difficult to estimate how much snow we got, but an on-line storm tracker said we got 12-16″.

So what’s the problem? After all, it’s New England, storms like this aren’t exactly unusual.

Well, Darling Boy had a 4:20 pm flight out of Logan Airport yesterday, he’s spending the week at my mom’s in Pittsburgh.

Getting to the airport was easy, and after a 30 minute wait to check in (since he’s an unaccompanied minor, I needed a gate pass, which meant we couldn’t use one of the self-check in kiosks), and just a 2 minute wait a the security check-point, we arrived at the gate 45 minutes before the flight was scheduled to board.

Except there was 1 problem- there was no aircraft there, and it was almost white-out conditions at the airport.

So we waited. And waited, until the plane arrived just 5 minutes before it was scheduled to depart, which obviously wasn’t going to happen.  Finally around 5pm they start boarding DB’s flight.  As an unaccompanied minor, he would board last, which happened about 5:20ish, I think.

Then more waiting.  I couldn’t leave yet, airline regulations state that the person dropping off an unaccompanied minor has to stay until the aircraft takes off.  I couldn’t leave once he boarded, and I couldn’t leave once the plane pushed back from the gate, I had to wait.

While I’m waiting for the plane to push back, the gate crew is talking about 4 passengers that they are waiting for.  As it turns out, there was a family of 4 on a flight in-bound from Ft Lauderdale who needed to make this connection.  Listening in to the conversation, I heard one of the gate crew say something about this family being stuck in Boston until Wednesday if they didn’t make the flight, ALL other flights were booked full until then.

They decided to hold the flight, already over an hour late, and with worsening weather conditions, for this family.  Keep in mind, their in-bound flight hadn’t even landed at this time.

I think JetBlue absolutely made the right decision.  Sure, 100 or so people would be arriving that much later in Pittsburgh.  Hell, my mother was already sitting in the Pittsburgh airport waiting to pick up DB!  But think about this family, who would have been stranded in Boston for several days.

They did a good job communicating what was going on- I asked and they said an announcement was made on the aircraft to let the passengers know the reason for the delay, plus there must have been some coordination with the in-bound Ft Lauderdale flight this family was on.  It parked 2 gates away and I was watching- these 4 people were the first ones off the plane!

A little after 6pm DB’s flight pushed back from the gate.  But remember, I couldn’t leave yet, I was stuck until it lifted off.

So I waited some more.  For a short while they held aircraft in place while plows cleared the runway, and DB’s flight finally lifted off at 6:45pm, 2 hours and 25 minutes late. I suppose it could have been worse, look at this:

One last adventure remained- I had a 40 mile drive home!

Not knowing what road conditions were like, a Twitter friend who lives along my route home generously offered to let me crash at her place for the night, which I seriously considered doing.  Fortunately, the Mass Pike wasn’t too bad, and while a night snowed in with my friend was VERY appealing, that would have meant leaving Veronica and PP stranded at home until I arrived sometime Monday.

Ten minutes after I pulled into the driveway my mom called from Pittsburgh, she had DB with her.

We both made it, later than expected, but we made it!

Time: 8:30 pm
Place: Home

As nasty as it was out (you can’t see the snow because of the shutter speed I used, but trust me, it was bad!), I can only think that my neighbor across the street has to work on Monday despite the state of emergency!

Time: 6:30 pm
Place: Garage

The boxes that out-of-town relatives used to ship gifts to us only added to the normal pile of packaging and wrapping paper.
With the blizzard that might hit us later Sunday, I suppose I should clean up & make room for Veronica’s car…

Christmas Funnies
