The way Veronica and I debated back and forth over whether to have a second child or not, in retrospect, was seemingly endless. We had already decided to wait several years after DB was born, since I started a full-time Ph.D. program when he was 3 years old. Before I even knew where I would be going to school Veronica and I had already decided that there was no way we could handle having an infant in the house while I was taking a full-time course load, but once my comprehensive exam was behind me it would be a different story. As my 3rd year and that comprehensive exam was approaching, we finally decided that yes, we did want a second child.

We had fun announcing Veronica’s pregnancy to the family. They were all gathered at our house for DB’s 5th birthday and we coached him to make an announced for us. We got everyone’s attention and right on cue DB declared “there’s a baby in mommy’s tummy.”  And there was much rejoicing :-)

A month or so later I told my mentor that Veronica was pregnant and that I was really hoping to have my comprehensive exam completed before the baby arrived. He asked what her due date was and after I told him, he paused for a moment then said “yeah, I don’t see any problem with that.”  Thank goodness!

Five years ago today Veronica woke up and said “I think it’s time!” and several hours later our wonderful little girl was born. As with DB our life hasn’t been the same since, and I couldn’t be happier.

Some examples of just how spoiled we’ve become…

I forgot about my coffee at work and it went cold, so I reheated it but forgot about it again, now it is cold once more and in my opinion, undrinkable. FML.

Parking spaces too narrow for my SUV.

My local deli sliced my meat at a 1 rather than a ½ and now my sandwiches are too tall.

I payed $3.55 a gallon for gas, and then down the street saw it for $3.49 a gallon

McDonald’s only gave me 3 BBQ sauces for my 20 piece chicken nuggets so now I have to ration them.

The restaurant didn’t have coke so I had to get pepsi.

I really want a burger, but McDonalds is still serving breakfast.

I had too much food for lunch and now I’m tired

I can’t get a 3G signal at my desk, only Edge!

My laptop is over a year old, and the fan is kind of loud when I stream movies from Netflix.

I took such a long shower this morning that the hot water ran out

Project 365 Days 79-85, Maryland Edition

Last Saturday morning I left for a work trip in Maryland and returned late last night, so my week in photos coincides perfectly with my week on the road! As always click on any photo to view full-sized in a new window

Day 79 Supermoon- I guess that’s what people were calling it, since it was closer to the Earth than it has been in years. I guess it did look bigger in the sky, but you can’t really tell from the photo.

Day 80 Statue- there was some Civil War battlefield near my hotel so I got out and wandered around shooting for a bit, trying to find something more interesting than “hey look, a statue in a field.” When I moved so that the statue was in silhouette I had my shot!

Day 83 Adolescent Sense of Humor- my inner Beavis and Butthead definitely came out when I saw this road sign! I mentioned some Home Stress issues the other day, since we’ll be moving to this area in 2012 I took the opportunity to explore some neighborhoods, which is when I saw this sign.

Day 84 One Big-Ass Gun!- More driving around and finding random sights, I came across a military museum of some sort that had a display of all sorts of tanks and cannons out front, this one was the biggest of them all. I’ll admit that the perspective accentuates the view, I put my camera on the ground set the timer for 10 seconds and ran out into the field of view. Yes that’s me in the picture.

Day 85 Almost Home- Heading north on I-91 in Connecticut, if you can read the GPS screen you can see I’m getting there. Contrast the expecting arrival time with that in this photo I posted to Twitter before I hit the road- not too bad considering I stopped 3 times and had to pass through New York City!

Home Stress

No, not stress at home, stress about home. Let me explain.

We bought our home in 2007 when we moved to Massachusetts. Since then, in case you’ve been living under a rock and didn’t notice, the economy hasn’t been all that great. For a while we owned more on the house than it was (probably) worth, though I think that situation has changed at least. What I know for sure is that we’re not going to come close to making out like we did when we sold our home in Pennsylvania. We owned that house for just 3 years and walked away with over $40K after closing costs were paid. Not too shabby!

Why am I concerned about this?

We’ll be moving in 2012.

More explaining is in order, though a little more circumspect for now. Maybe someday I’ll say just who I’m a research scientist for, but certainly not yet. I will say that my employer offers some unique opportunities to relocate to other parts of the company (and country) periodically, and in fact such moves are encouraged if I’m interested in moving up the ladder someday.

Since last weekend I’ve been at 2 locations in Maryland for a training course, one of which is where I’ll be moving to in 2012. I’ve taken advantage of having some free time in the evenings to explore the area, checking out neighborhoods and gauging what areas we might consider living in.

This has lead to all sorts of stressful questions

What if we have trouble selling our home?

What if our home still isn’t worth what we owe on it?

What about keeping that place and renting it?

Do we want to be landlords from 400 miles away?

Can we afford what we want in Maryland?

Can we find the perfect house for us in an area with good schools? We plan on being in this area at least until DB graduates high school (now there’s a scary thought!)

Will Veronica have trouble finding a job?

Thursday evening Veronica called and we spent 20 minutes talking about our options, and about my impressions of the area.

I felt so much better after talking to her.

Still, this being a responsible adult shit is no fun some days…

Quickie

Not you pervs, not that type of quickie, I’ve only got 10 minutes before I have to finish getting ready to go! Quick thoughts, in bullets…

- there are some high maintenance people in this course I’m attending. Attendance is 100% voluntary yet you’d think someone held a gun to their heads to get them here.

- I need to get out for some exercise, 9 hrs a day in a classroom is NOT helping me reach my weight loss or fitness goals!

- While I’m here I’m able to check out the area that we’re 99.9% sure that we’ll be moving to someday

- It’s a shame to have 6 nights in a hotel room and no one to share it with

- I’m glad I choose to drive rather than fly here. I was able to stop and meet a blogger friend on the way here, I didn’t have to worry about packing light because I was flying, and I have the freedom to get around once I get back to my hotel once the work day is over

- But why did I bring my work laptop? I spent 2 hrs last night replying to e-mails that have accumulated while I was gone

- I’m looking forward to a couple of vacation days when I get back home. And a date with Katie :-)

- Now that we’ve changed training sites, I’m not forcibly Disconnected from the outside world.

- I really need to do better at replying to comments on my blog, I appreciate everyone who takes the time to leave a comment yet I don’t do a good job of showing that appreciation.
