For those of you on Gmail, have you ever noticed this little hyperlink down at the bottom right corner of the screen?

If you click on “Details”, the last 10 sessions on your account will be displayed. Now normally I wouldn’t look at it, but if I did it would display a listing of several IP addresses- my router at home, the one for my iPhone and maybe the IP address of my work computer.

I forget what it will say, but if someone else is logged into an account at the same time, there’s a message to that effect. I noticed that one day and figured it was Veronica, she does have my email password, so it wouldn’t be unusual.

But this WAS unusual

An entry from somewhere in Montana?  Time to run the IP address thru a search engine

How I have no idea if this is some weird quirk of how the internet works and just reflects a redirect through a server somewhere.  I do know that it was time to change my password, just in case something was up.

Was I right to suspect that my email account was hacked? I don’t know, but I do know that I haven’t noticed any unusual entries in the “Last Account Activity” list since then, and I’ve been keeping watch!

If you’re interested, here’s a great post on choosing a good password.

Interesting.  Bresnan owns “Optimum” a company that offers TV, Internet and Phone services.  Add to this a statement in GMail’s help section “if you access Gmail on a mobile device, your login history will
contain mobile logins that may appear to come from your carrier’s mobile
Internet gateway(s). Note that mobile gateways may be in a geographic location
far from the area where you’re accessing your account.”  So, if you use Optimum, you should be OK, if not, change that password!

Damn, now I feel like Colombo!

Very interesting.  I suspect your mind went to the same place mine did when you saw Helena, Montana as the location.  Coincidence?  I wonder…
