It’s with mixed emotions that I see that Osbasso is ending the “official” HNT, today is the last day.  HNT marked my entry into blogging, I actually contributed to The Other HNT before I even had a blog (here I am, July 24, 2008, 6 weeks before the original Hubman’s Hangout, blogspot version, was launched.) My photography hobby is a direct result of my desire to improve the quality of the HNT photos I took of Veronica and myself, for the joy I get out of photography, I’m thankful.

Veronica loved participating, as a late-30s mom of two, she appreciated the supportive encouraging comments and the self-esteem boost that resulted.

My blogging “community” at the start centered around HNT, many fellow HNTers became friends, virtually or in real life. Veronica met Osbasso twice, I met him once, and we’ve both worn the “OsShirt”.  I even ended up sleeping with several fellow HNTers along the way. Shocking, I know ;-)

It’s sad to see the community fall apart. People seemed to take sides, there was Osbasso with HNT and Dangerous Lilly with Wanton Wednesday, which she created as a direct result of some highly judgmental comments Os made about “sex bloggers”. There was a perception that there was a “right” and a “wrong” way to do HNT and a fractured community resulted.

As for the question mark in the title of this post, and this being the end of HNT, just because Osbasso is calling it quits doesn’t mean that HNT is going to disappear. There are people who post or tweet HNT photos who have never heard of him and will continue on, oblivious to “the end”. There are likely others who will continue, even though there won’t be a place to announce “I’m up.” Perhaps Wanton Wednesday and Sinful Sunday will see more people joining in the fun. Who knows…

I’ve already said more than I intended, time for me to bite my tongue.

Happy HNT

Though I know full well I won’t get it.

Back in August I wondered if HNT might be dead as a meme. Bottom line, I wrote about missing the sense of community that was centered around HNT, all of my early blogging friends at least had participation in HNT in common. Over time, people drifted away, and there were less and less comments (but maybe still just as many if one counted mentions on Twitter or Tumblr), perhaps dampening people’s enthusiasm for exposing themselves.

Osbasso’s response to my post? Exactly what you’d expect from a 15 yr old boy grown man

In true passive-aggressive fashion he didn’t name me, but I think his target was pretty obvious.

Since I was only sporadically participating at the time, I missed his post in May where he talked about the very same issues and shared his thoughts on possibly ending HNT as we know it on his blog, the “home” of HNT.  Seems I hit a nerve with him, huh?  Interesting response, getting the big “Fuck you” from someone for basically saying the same thing he said, 3 months earlier.

Guess what he announced with this past weeks HNT? That he’s shutting down HNT at the end of the year, declaring that it’s run the course for him and it’s time to end it.

Looks like I was right after all.

Oh, and if you think I really do want or expect an apology, you don’t know me at all, I really couldn’t care less about his opinion of me.

I don’t consider myself bald, I’m just taller than my hair – Lucius Annaeus Seneca

For quite a while I’ve been thinking about how I might look if I gave up on my receding and increasingly gray hair and shaved my head.  And now I know! But I don’t really like it, I’m going to let it grow back some but still keep it really short.

Oh, even though I lamented the demise of HNT a few weeks ago, and despite Osbasso’s response to me, I still plan on participating when the mood strikes me. Like today, for example :-)

Happy HNT!

Before I self-hosted my blog, before my blog was on wordpress.com, before my blog was on blogspot.com, before I even HAD a blog I participated in HNT. I made a guest appearance or 2 on Veronica’s blog and I submitted photos to The Other HNT in the summer of 2008.  Ask nicely and I might even share the link to those posts!  HNT was the center of gravity of the part of the blogosphere that I called home.

Wednesday evenings, the early birds and those across the pond would start publishing their posts. When Osbasso posted his HNT for the week (usually right around 10:30pm mountain time), within minutes there were numerous comments from people announcing “I’m up!”  By the time I visited on Thursday morning, it wouldn’t be uncommon for there to be 50, 60, 70 or even more comments.  My post would have gone up automatically at 12:01am and when I awoke there would be 8-10 comments, by the end of the day 30-40 comments wouldn’t be unusual.

Veronica: I have to admit that HNT is really what made my blog initially and drove the traffic there.  People came for the HNT and stayed around for the recipes and musings.  I also remember waking up to a dozen comments, which was awesome.  I also found it very flattering to hear such positive comments about my body.

Now that Veronica mentions it, for both of us and I’m sure for others, Thursday was the peak blog traffic day. The half-nekkidness is what brought people to our blogs, fortunately they stuck around for the other content we posted.

Just for the hell of it, I went back 2 years, to my Silhouette HNT post, there were 59 comments. Last time I played? 13 comments.  And I know that daily site visits are about the same, but less people are commenting. So far this week on Osbasso’s blog there is a total of 29 comments from people announcing that they are participating.

Veronica: I wonder if some of the HNT people also decided to do Wanton Wednesday instead.

I’m sure Wanton Wednesday has had an effect, thought that’s an even smaller community each week, so I don’t think it’s had too much effect.

This isn’t a post whining about the lack of comments about how hot I am (hahaha) or how good my photography is (hahaha again), it’s about the disappearance of a community.

Veronica: I think where a large portion of our community has been infidelity bloggers and other people who blogged anonymously, and as they have been found out, they disappeared.

I don’t think it’s just the anonymous or infidelity bloggers, I think that as blogs naturally went away for whatever reason, new ones haven’t replaced them. Love him or hate him, one of the things I liked about Southern Sage was that every Friday he had a post that included as many of the bloggers new to HNT that he was aware of, and people knew he did that, so they made sure to point newbies out to him for inclusion. That brought visitors and comments to these blogs and probably encouraged future participation in HNT.

About 2 years ago Veronica was inspired to post an HNT showing her most “flawed” body part, the area of her body that she liked the least. She wrote about the idea a week prior, and to our surprise there were literally dozens of others who joined in the idea. The HNT community seemed to rally around the idea of embracing our flaws and accepting ourselves as we are. Veronica and many others have written about how HNT has helped their self-esteem and body image. I think this is due in large part to the comments people leave week after week, reaffirming that despite however we all look, we’re all beautiful in our own way.

Veronica: I loved that post.  That was one of the ones I was the most proud of, as there were so many people that got involved and shared a really vulnerable part of themselves.  Now? I think HNT is dying. Veronica: I am not going to argue with you.  It seems that participation has dropped off in the past year.  I don’t know if it’s the challenge of taking interesting and creative nekkid pics of yourself each week, or if people have times when they don’t feel good about their bodies and decide to take a break. Once you get out of the habit of posting a weekly HNT it is easy to stay out of the habit.  Then there is the lack of comments.  I also think for people that if you are posting yourself nekkid and not getting the comments, it’s not so fun to put yourself out there week after week.

I’m curious to hear from my readers, especially those long time HNT participants. Am I right? Am I wrong? Am I an idiot? Wait, don’t answer that last one…

Comments are open, let’s hear it!

It’s been over 2 years since I’ve had a mystery guest for HNT, and I have to say, this friend is well worth the wait!  She won’t be revealed, and good luck guessing who she is, she doesn’t have a blog and from all appearances is a good girl on Twitter.

She told me this is her very first time with sharing photos of herself on the internet.  Please, make her feel welcome, maybe she’ll even play again someday!

Don't forget the click-thru

If you really want to see me, just visit yesterday’s Wanton Wednesday post.
Or maybe I’ll add my own HNT later in the day, who knows…

Visit Osbasso for the rest of the Half-Nekkid fun!

This will be my last HNT for a while.

Please, hold your applause until I’m done ;-)

In the last 2 years I’ve gained about 20 lbs and frankly, I’m disgusted with myself right now. All of the usual motivators aren’t working, so I need to think outside the box.

My solution is to deny myself something I enjoy, participation in HNT.

I’ve been doing this since before I had a blog actually, I started at The Other HNT in July of 2008, and I haven’t missed a single week of HNT since Sept 4, 2008, which is the day after I started my original blog. Part of HNT for me is the creative challenge, finding new ways to show pieces of myself.  Of course, I’d be lying if I said that the complimentary comments aren’t part of it, because they are, and that’s exactly why I’m choosing this way to motivate myself. If I want those comments, I want to earn them by losing the weight I HAVE to lose.

When will I resume participating in HNT? When the number on the scale is less than 200 lbs, 12.6 lbs from now. Rejoining the HNT crowd will be my way of rewarding myself for reaching not the end, but a milestone on the way to my goal of 190 lbs.

Meanwhile Veronica is continuing with her Alphabet HNT series, today’s is pretty cute, and Osbasso’s place is where you’ll find the rest of the half-nekkid people.

See ya!
