Between the time I left home for San Antonio on July 8th and returned on Sept 17th…

71 Days away
11 Beds slept in
4100+ Miles of driving
20 States
5 new partners
8 exams taken
10 presentations given
3 nights with Veronica
621 miles pedaled on my bike
0 lbs lost (grr….)
1 Course completed
1 surprise trip to NY
2 round trips to Dallas-Ft Worth
12 blogger/Twitter friend meetings
25 blogging/Twitter friends met
2 exotic dancers, who are also prostitutes, propositioned me

I could probably come up with more, but you get the idea, it was quite the summer!  If you missed it, here is my post about the welcome home I got last night from the kids.

Now I’m home, and this is the end of posts about my road trip.  Time to look forward and not back anymore….

Veronica has posted a list twice now and some others have followed suit, now it’s my turn to jump on the bandwagon.  In no particular order, 10 things that I’m enjoying right now

1- Webcam: being able to see the kids several times a week has made this separation so much easier, for me and for them

2-  Friends, Part 1: I’ve made a number of good friends while I’ve been in this course.  We’ve learned from each other, helped each other out, and stuck together when our instructor was being a butthead.  They’ve made this time away much more enjoyable.

3- Weather: the blast furnace-like heat has subsided and it’s pretty damn nice out.  Yesterday I spent 2 hrs out by the pool.  Believe me, you’re not doing that in mid-September in New England!

4- Knowing that the countdown until I return home has reached single digits.  Look at the top of the right sidebar, that clock is counting down to 6pm eastern time on Friday, my anticipated arrival time at home.

5- Friends, Part 2: I’ve got some pretty good friends in the online world, they’ve also made this time away much more enjoyable!

6- My course is 99.9% complete.  A couple of hours of professional development seminars tomorrow, then graduation Tuesday morning.  After that, I’m on the road.

7- Cycling- with the weather down here, and no obligations to anyone but myself outside of the course, I’ve had plenty of time to ride and have taken full advantage of that.  Since I left home on July 9th, I’ve logged 593 miles and counting.

8- Project365- 250+ days into it, I still haven’t missed posting a picture of the day even once and it hasn’t become a chore at all, it’s just something I do every day.  Some pictures are obviously better than others but on the whole I really believe that I’ve become a better photographer as a result.  I just might continue in 2011!

9- My friend-with-benefits- we’ve only gotten together a couple of times, but she’s a lot of fun, in and out of the bedroom, and I’m glad we’ve become friends.  I’m hoping for one last visit with her before I go….

10- Packing- yesterday I started packing stuff in preparation to leave on Tuesday :-)

Thanks for reading, I’ll leave you with a picture from my time at the pool yestereday

Shuffle Play

 Tagged with: ,
Jul 262010

13messages and AshlyStar both did this recently and I thought I’d try as well.  Setting my iPod to shuffle play, lets see what the first 25 songs are.  I’m predicting more Metallica than any other artist…

1. Godsmack- Keep Away, from Godsmack
2. REM- Hairshirt, from Green
3. Judas Priest- Living After Midnight, from Metal Works ’73-’93
4. Aerosmith- Young Lust, from Pump
5. Spiderbait- Fucken Awesome, from Tonight Alright
One anecdote about this album- I bought it based on the recommendation of Stephen King in one of his columns in Entertainment Weekly.  I’m paraphrasing, but he basically said “If Clay Aiken tried to sing like this, his head would explode”- that’s enough of an endorsement for me! They also do a great cover of Black Betty on this album.
6. Disturbed- The Game, from The Sickness
7. The Vaughn Bros- Long Way from Home, from Family Style (and their only album, before Stevie Ray died in an accident)
8. The Offspring- Why Don’t You Get a Job, from Americana
9. Elton John- Your Song, from Live in Australia
10. Metallica- Master of Puppets, from Master of Puppets
11. REM- Radio Free Europe, from Eponymous
12. Billy Joel- The Stranger, from Greatest Hits Vols 1 & 2
13. Nickelback- S.E.X., from Dark Horse
14. Megadeth- A Tout Le Monde, from Capital Punishment
15. Metallica- Of Wolf and Man, from the so-called “Black Album”
16. Eurythmics- Sweet Dreams, from Pure 80′s (a compilation disc)
17. Buckcherry- Crazy Bitch, from 15
18. Van Halen- Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love, from Right Here, Right Now (2 CD live album)
19. Elton John- Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me, from Live in Australia
20. REM- Romance, from Eponymous
21. Metallica- Turn the Page, from Garage Inc
22. Faith No More- From Out of Nowhere, from The Real Thing
23. The Cult- Edie (Ciao Baby), from Pure Cult: The Singles
24. Rush- What You’re Doing (live version), from Chronicles
25. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Subway to Venus, from Mother’s Milk

No surprise that Metallica made 3 appearances on this list (I have every one of their albums on my iPod), but Elton John twice and REM 3 times surprised me.  I only have that one Elton John album on my phone and I don’t listen to REM all that often, don’t know why, they’re a great band.  Neil Young, one of my all-time favorites, didn’t show up at all.  That’s what you get from random play!

I have several dozen more albums that I could transfer to my iTunes library, but my iPhone is almost at capacity (should have gotten the 16 GB model!) and I don’t feel like manually syncing songs between the computer and phone.

Anyone else gonna give this idea a try?  If you do, please leave a comment and let me know, I love discovering new music!

51 Questions

I saw this on Ashly’s tumblr, she got it from somewhere else, so who knows where it started.  Anyway, I like the questions, so here goes…

Not that I know of!

Look, TMI Tuesday lives!

1. With warm weather on the horizon, what outdoor activity are you most looking forward to?

I LOVE summer, it’s my favorite time of year, so there are several things. Relaxing in the yard on the hammock (as in my header image above!), playing in the yard with the kids, getting out on my bike.  And girls in shorts :-)

2. Ever found any strange items while Spring cleaning? If so, what?

I don’t think we’ve found anything strange, though I sure there have been times that “lost” items have miraculously reappeared!

3. Daylight savings time was this month…what were you doing when you lost an hour?

Since it officially occurs at 2am, a time I rarely see, I was sleeping!

4. What are some weird home remedies that you have tried to cure allergies or seasonal colds?

I don’t put much faith in home remedies for the cold, and I don’t have any allergies.  The most I’ll do when I have a cold is take some Nyquil or Sudafed.  Other than that, I just ignore it.  It’s just a cold, not the end of the world.

5. If you could change the tune of the ice cream truck to any song, which would you change it to and why?

Why would I want to change the tune of the ice cream truck!?

Don’t forget to visit Tits for Troops today! Veronica and I, along with a number of lovely ladies, are flashing in the name of morale :-)

Veronica is revealing what she does when I’m not around.  You won’t believe it, so go read her post, would ya?

Happy Tuesday!!

I’m seen others play this meme, so I thought I would give it a whirl.  Click on the button above if you want to play!

1. How old is the oldest pair of shoes in your closet?

I have a pair of casual shoes that are probably 5 yrs old, and my snow boots are probably about that old as well.

2. Did you buy Girl Scout cookies this year? If so, what variety?

No I didn’t, because I’m trying to lose a few pounds and if I bought a box of Thin Mints, there is a distinct possibility that I would eat the entire box in a day.  What’s the name of the ones with peanut butter, those are pretty damn good too!

3. Do you know how to ballroom dance? If not, would you like to?

I used to, kind of. As an undergraduate phys ed major, we all had to take a semester of ballroom dance.  As it turns out, the guys outnumbered the girls by quite a bit and I ended up pairing up with my roommate from freshman year (I think I took this class my senior yr) and at the start of each class he and I would argue about who would take the lead and who would be the chick and follow.  Fun times!

4. Were you a responsible child/teenager?

Very much so, especially as a teenager. My parents divorced when I was 16 but my mom kept the house, so it was she and I and my younger sister and I was expected to take care of a lot of the stuff around the house.  This was actually a big bone of contention between my sister and I, as she was definitely the rebellious teen.  Following 2 yrs behind me in school, she got a lot of “why can’t you be a good student like your brother was?” from some asshat teachers, which really wasn’t fair to her.

5. How many of this year’s Oscar-nominated movies did you see?

None. Veronica and I love the movies, but we have different tastes and rarely go.  I’ll rent a few of this years nominees on blu-ray someday.

6. If you’re going to have a medical procedure done, such as having blood drawn, is it easier for you to watch someone else having the procedure done or have it done yourself?

Either one! In my former enlisted life in the Army, I was a medical lab tech and a pretty good phlebotomist.

7. What is your favorite day of the week and why?

Friday! Isn’t that everyone’s favorite?  And isn’t the reason obvious?

8. Do you miss anyone right now?

Absolutely! And some of the people I miss most, at least seeing in person, might be reading this today.

9. Do hospitals make you queasy?

Not at all.  Though they are big germ factories, so I’d prefer not to spend too much time in one!

10. At which store would you like to max-out your credit card. Not that you ever would, you responsible person, you.

It would be easy to do that at Best Buy, perhaps a camera store, and definitely a furniture store.  We have an eclectic collection of hand-me-down and used furniture and it would be nice to replace some of it.

11. Are you true to the brand names of products/items?

Not really, though for some stuff I am.  If I need a to buy hand tool, nothing but Craftsmen will do.  Generic breakfast cereal tastes like the box in came in to me, but for many things, I don’t really care.

12. Which is more difficult: looking into someone’s eyes when you are telling someone how you feel, or looking into someone’s eyes when he/she is telling you how he/she feels?

Neither, I’m perfectly comfortable looking directly into someone’s eyes during an intimate conversation.

Happy Hump Day!!

So I guess I don’t really have a choice, it’s time to play!  I wonder if she’s trying to figure anything out about me….

1. LUST: Besides your current Significant Other who do you lust for or have you lusted for?

I have numerous friends in the blogosphere and the Twitterverse that inspire lustful thoughts. They know who they are ;-)

2. GLUTTONY: What food brings out your inner glutton?

Chocolate!!!!!

3. GREED: What are you greedy for?

I read this one outline and Veronica opined “cookies?”  She might be right!  I’m also greedy for her body….

4. SLOTH: What is your plan for an ideal day of sloth?

Me, Veronica, a hotel, room service.  Oh, and maybe a friend or two and a supply of condoms and lube :-)

5. WRATH: Describe a time that you let out a can of whoop ass on someone.

Physically? I’ve never been in an altercation as an adult, the last fight I remember was in 7th or 8th grade, I was getting picked on in class so I clocked him right in the face in the hall after class.  Verbally, I’ve written some pretty harsh critiques of manuscripts that have crossed my desk for peer-review in scientific journals.  Does that count?

6. ENVY: Who or what do you envy? Why?

Never mind 6-pack abs, I’ll take a flat stomach, thankyouverymuch.  I also have a little bit of house envy.  When we moved to Massachusetts from Pennsylvania we had to downsize a bit, since housing is so goddamn expensive here.  I miss the space we had there and envy those with a home that size in this area.

7. PRIDE: Have you ever had to swallow your pride? What are you proud of?

Of course I’ve had to swallow my pride- I’m man enough to admit when I’m wrong.

I’m very proud of my kids, they’re the bestest.  Veronica’s professional growth and development has been a joy to watch over the years, rising from mind-numbing retails jobs to senior management in municipal government.  As for myself, there are 3 little letters after my name that I’m rather proud of earning.

Jan 012010

NY Diva posted this the other day and I liked it so much I stole it for myself.

IN THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND…(NINE)

1. What did you do that you’d never done before?

Traveled to a few places [Miami, Las Vegas], had some spectacular erotic adventures with and without Veronica.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I’m not big on resolutions, if I made any, I don’t remember what they were.  I have a few things I want to accomplish this year.

3. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?

Six-pack abs? Who says it has to be realistic!

4. What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory?

A new date that didn’t have personal meaning before? I have no idea…

5. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Nothing to speak of, my health has been pretty good.

6. What was the best thing you bought?

An airfare and hotel package for our trip to Las Vegas in October.

7. Where did most of your money go?

Mortgage, other assorted bills.  We also managed to invest or save about 10% of our gross income last year.

8. What did you get really, really excited about?

Veronica and I had several exciting adventures last year!

9. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? About the same
b) thinner or fatter? Fatter, by about 10 lbs.  Arrghhh
c) richer or poorer? Richer. Veronica and I have been very fortunate in this economy

10. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Rode my bicycle and my motorcycle.

11. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Work (Really, who wishes that they worked more?). Eat (See 9b)

12. How will you be spending new years?

As usual, it was a quiet evening at home. 20 New Years Eves together, we’ve never gone out.

13. Did you fall in love in 2009?

With Veronica, all over again!

14. How many one-night stands?

Oh crap, let’s see….

There are 6 women I had sex with on just one occasion in the last year.  I hope to see 4 of them again in 2010 ;-)

15. What was your favorite TV program?

I watch very little scripted network TV.  I do watch a lot of sports, especially football and baseball, and the Discovery Channel- Darling Boy and I love to watch Dirty Jobs and Mythbusters together.

16. What was the best book you read?

I should have answered “reading” for #10! I think I only read about a half-dozen books all year, so picking the best isn’t really that significant.

17. What did you want and get?

My new camera!

18. What did you want and not get?

Nothing comes to mind.  How about to win the lottery? Oh wait, I never buy a ticket…

19. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

It was a Saturday and Veronica had a half-day conference, so I was Mr Mom for part of the day, then she made me chicken parmigiana for my birthday dinner.  We probably spent the evening watching the NFL playoffs, and I’m sure that we had birthday sex!  I turned 39 in 2009, 40 is just a matter of weeks away.

20. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?

Utilitarian

21. What kept you sane?

Veronica keeps me sane!

22. What political issue stirred you the most?

The health care debate- what a cluster-fuck!

23. Who was the best new person you met?

One best person? I can’t narrow it down.  From the blogosphere, in 2009 I met Emmy and her hubby Garbonzo, Red Rider and his lovely wife, Jess, Dharma, Saucy Wildcat, April, Sexy PTA Mom, The Dirty Side of Us, and 2 others who are remaining anonymous ;-)

It’s a pleasure every time I meet a blogger friend in person, whether it’s only for an hour or two [Saucy Wildcat, Dharma] or an entire weekend [several others] and hope to meet more blogger friends in 2010.  I’ll be traveling to San Diego [late March], Anaheim [late April], Baltimore [early June], then spending 2 months in San Antonio later in the year [and driving there and back], so there should be ample opportunities!

24. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:

I didn’t learn it in 2009, but remembering that my kids are the most important people in my life is pretty damn valuable!

The end!  Goodbye to 2009, here’s to 2010 and all that the future holds!

Nov 212009

I have very few family pictures from my childhood.  Not because they don’t exist, but because either my mom, dad or sister ended up with all of them when my childhood home was sold [My parents divorced when I was 16 and the house was sold a few years later when my sister graduated high school].  Then last winter my dad gave me this treat:

Anyone old enough to remember 35mm slides?  That is 21 slide carousels, each with 100 slides, plus there are another 200 or so loose slides.  They’ve been sitting in my basement for almost year now.

The best part? My dad still had the projector, but it was broken.  I didn’t even try to find someone to repair a late-1960′s Bell and Howell slide projector. The only way I can view them, short of holding them up to the light, is with this little gadget:

It’s a manual slide viewer.  You load about 20 slides into the right side of the machine, then by pushing and pulling the gray handle on the right, you advance one slide at a time into the viewer, and viewed slides are stacked up on the left.

Veronica and I have been looking into having all of these slides digitized.  We first thought about buying a slide scanner, but they’re not cheap, we’d only use it for this one project, and frankly, I don’t have the time to scan 2000+ slides.

Then Veronica found some businesses that specialize in slide-to-digital transfer. Yeah, at a cost of $0.45 per slide.  No thanks.  So we’re still looking.  In the meanwhile, this weekend I’m going to start taking every last slide out of the carousels, deciding if any of them should be tossed, then organizing them for shipping to someone to digitize.  It’ll probably end up costing us several hundred dollars anyway, but these slides span a 12 yr period starting 4 yrs before I was born, so it’s not like I can just say ‘fuck it’ and throw them all out.

Besides, who knows what gems we mind find in the collection.  Maybe something like this:

I said I have a few childhood pics, not no childhood pics!  This was taken after my first haircut.

All together now- “Awwww…….”

A couple of weeks ago I saw a post on The Quest for T in which she shared some pictures of her bookshelf, with the idea that you can learn a lot about a person by the books they read.

I’ve always been a reader.  Right now there are 3 books on the night stand and between Veronica and I there are 4 mostly full, wall-height bookcases in the house.  Some shelves have kids books, others have Veronica’s books, and some I going to show you here and mention a few favorite books.  FYI, click on each of the pictures to see larger versions in a new window.

100_2189

Obviously, I’m a fan of biographies.  Some I’ve read because I was curious about the person (Howard Hughes, Winston Churchill), others because on current events (John McCains two autobiographies, as well as Ricardo Sanchez’).  Other books I have because of the author- David Halberstam and Stephan Ambrose are two favorite historians.  The small, old prayer book laying on top of the pile on the right was given to my great-grandfather by his pastor and the inscription is dated 1908.  Just behind that is “Moby Dick”, which I’ve never read and have no idea where I got it from.  You ever wonder why there is a left/liberal bias in academia and science?  Just read “The Republican War on Science”. See the two books laying down in the upper left?  “The Threesome Handbook” and “The Straight Girls Guide to Sleeping with Chicks”.  As if you needed any more proof that Veronica and I are geeks who read up on something before trying it.  I think they were helpful ;-)

100_2192

I’m also a big sports fan, as this shelf will attest to.  Some of these will not make it if/when we move again, while others are great reads- Lance Armstrong’s autobiography and “Game of Shadows” come to mind.  I’m fascinated by exploration, especially to geographic extremes and “Last Climb”, “Ghosts of Everest” and “Detectives on Everest” are all about George Mallory’s failed attempt to summit Mt. Everest in 1923.  Just to the left of those 3 is “The Endurance” which is the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew’s attempt to reach the South Pole in 1913.  They were stranded in Antartica for over a year and their story is perhaps the most amazing tale of survival I’ve ever read.  Part of the story is that the expedition photographer insisted on carrying all of his lead photographic plates for posterity- many of his pictures are reproduced in this book.  His pictures are stunning.

100_2191

I do have a light side too, you know!  Notice the Bloom County, Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert, and The Far Side books?  Also on this shelf is my high school yearbook, a history of my undergraduate alma mater, and a set of National Geographic books that my parents bought for me that I saved for my kids.  “The Big Dig” I totally forgot to show Southern Vixen when she was here, after we returned from showing her around Boston last Sunday.  Oops…

Speaking of SoVix, did you see her HNT yesterday?  There was someone with her you might recognize ;-)

Have a great weekend everyone!  Veronica is taking PP to New York for my sister’s baby shower and DB and I are staying home.  So if you see me online late at night, won’t you keep me company and say hi?  Thanks!
