Beer!

Keep these in mind if you happen to imbibe a few beers this weekend

Facts

According to a 10th century Chinese imperial edict, entrance to heaven requires the use of alcohol in moderation.

In medieval Scotland, death was the punishment for those caught adulterating any alcoholic beverage.

Bavaria is home to more than a sixth of the world’s breweries. Not surprisingly, Bavarians drink almost 48 gallons of beer per capita. In contract, US beer consumption is around 22.1 gallons per person.

In ancient Greece, the word “symposium” originally meant a number of men getting together for an evening of drink and good conversation.

Among beer drinkers over the age of 21, more beer is imbibed than tea, powdered drinks, and juice combined. At 22.1 gallons per person, the figure for beer is just under that of milk, at 24.2 gallons per capita.

A strange thing happened on the way to the breakup of Czechoslovakia in 1993. One of the its states, now the independent Czech Republic, became the country with the highest per capita beer consumption in the world (42.1 gallons in 1998), displacing the perennial camp, Germany.

I was drafting this post and asked Veronica for title suggestions. She came up with “Veronica is so fucking thoughtful” and I realized that it’s the perfect title!

She was shopping at Wegmans supermarket (I dare you to ask her how much she loves Wegmans, but make sure you have time) and was in the beer section. Wegmans does something pretty cool- they have empty 6 pack carriers and you can make your own sampler pack from their wide variety of beers.

She got me:
Black Chocolate Stout from Brooklyn Brewery
Winter Ale from Wachusett Brewing Co
Porter from Southern Tier Brewing Co
Saranac Big Moose Ale from Matt Brewing Co
Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale from Founders Brewing Co
Amber Ale from Fischer Brewing (in France!)

On the day that a friend of ours was coming over to spend the night, I suppose it was fitting that this was the beer that caught Veronica’s eye at the supermarket for her to bring home for me.

I was very curious to try a beer called chocolate chili bock, but it was surprisingly underwhelming, I expected more from it. Not that it was bad, just kinda plain. I will say that at 8.5% ABV a half-liter bottle was all I needed!

As for the night (and next morning) with our friend, is was far from plain :-)

For this photo I did a little experimenting with off-camera flash. It took a half-dozen tries but I found a setting that resulted in a passably decent exposure. I’m learning, slowly but surely I’m getting better at flash photography. I think…

This seemed like an appropriate beer to have while I was sitting on the couch with Katie and we were waiting to make sure the kids were asleep…

Last month, as St Patricks Day was approaching, The Daily Beast published their list of the 50 Healthiest Beers. Besides their place on this list, can anyone tell me what these beers have in common?

I.C. Light
Michelob Ultra
Natural Light
Busch Light
Milwaukee’s Best
Keystone Light
Icehouse

I think these are some of the nastiest, worst excuses for beer ever made! Does any self-respecting beer lover even drink this crap? And what the hell was the writer drinking when he came up with this list. There are 3 beers on the entire list I would drink- Yuengling Light, Guinness (never thought of that as low calorie!) and Redhook IPA. Everything else is nothing more than chilled horse piss, absolutely disgusting.

Now me, if I’m drinking a beer, I’m going to pick something full of flavor and character. There is a lot more to a beer than how many calories it has or how much alcohol it contains. Wachusett Brown Ale, many of the varieties of Sam Adams, Brooklyn Brewery Black Chocolate Stout, Pete’s Wicked Ale, THOSE are beers worth drinking! As Jim Koch, the brewer of Sam Adams, would say “take pride in your beer!”

If you think all beers are the same, click on the picture to view full-sized and check this out. I don’t know how accurate it is, but someone certainly put some time into creating it.

Time: Noon
Place: Sam Adams Brewery, Jamaica Plain, MA

After 9+ years living in the area, I finally made the pilgrimage to Mecca :-)

Every Sam Adams beer is created in this room, as DB said “it’s their beer lab!”
Most Sam Adams is actually brewed in either Pennsylvania or Ohio, the Boston brewery is where they experiment with new brews, brew beers for competitions, perform quality control on samples from the other breweries, and produce limited runs of certain specialty beers.

It’s the dude from the TV commercials!  This is Bob Cannon, one of the brewmasters.
I got a kick out of people asking to having their photo taken with a guy who makes beer for a living.

As part of the tour, everyone got a souvenir 6 oz glass AND beer to put in it!  The last tour stop was the tasting room, where we each got to sample 3 beers, Boston Lager and 2 seasonal brews, in this case Winter Lager, pictured here, and Stony Brook Red, only available on tap in the Boston area or in the gift shop.

Speaking of the Stony Brook Red and the gift shop, I couldn’t resist!
These are 750mL bottles from what they call the Barrel Room Collection.

I can’t believe it took me so long to get there.  Not only is Sam Adams my favorite beer, but the brewery is an easy 40 minute drive from my house, parking is free, the tour is free, samples are free, and Matt the tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining.

Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy“- Benjamin Franklin

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.” – Dave Barry

My favorite local liquor store always has a nice variety of microbrew and craft beers, so sometimes I’ll pick up a 6-pack of something I’ve never had before. I like brown ales and I like chocolate labs, so I figured I couldn’t go wrong with this beer!

A trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame would not be complete without souvenirs, right? Darling Boy got his first baseball (yeah yeah I know….), we all got t-shirts and I got this beer glass.  I tested the glass Saturday- it took a few beers, but I’ve determined that it works just fine :-)

Tuesday evening a couple of friends and I walked to the Fells Point area of Baltimore and found a little place called Max’s Tap House.  Max’s has 80+ beers on tap and even more than that available bottled.

Just about a year ago, this same conference that I’m attending in Baltimore this week was held in Seattle, WA.  Veronica came with me and our friends Emmy and her husband Garbonzo drove up from their neck of the woods to meet us and spend a few days together.  In Seattle we found a place called The Tap Room, which had even more beers on tap than Max’s Tap House.  With that memory in mind, I figured that it was only fitting that I text Emmy a picture of what I was drinking Tuesday evening.  Especially since with the time zone difference, she was likely still at work.  ‘Cause that’s the kind of friend I am ;-)

I texted her “I’m having a chocolate stout” along with this picture

I guess she didn’t mind me teasing her at work, she just replied “Yum!!”

While I was there I noticed a display case on the wall with several t-shirts.  This one made me smile!

Happy Hump Day!!
(I’ll probably post something for Wanton Wednesday later in the day)

Once again, Veronica returned from a trip to the liquor store with a new beer for me to try.  Unlike the last time, this one was pretty good!
