Since it’s the start of a new year, and many people are making resolutions concerning health and fitness, I thought I’d share this video. It’s a little long at 9 minutes, but take the time to watch it, I think it’s well worth it. I love how he flips around the argument about having enough time, which you can really apply to anything, not just exercise.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it here yet, but I know that I’ve mentioned on Twitter that I started working out at a CrossFit gym several weeks ago. I really like the workouts- there’s a mix of traditional power- and Olympic-lifting moves, body weight exercises, plyometrics, gymnastics-based moves, and short-duration high-intensity cardio. Each day is different, the workouts are prescribed by the coaches at the gym, all I do is adjust the load based on my ability.

Everything is done in a class setting, there’s no showing up and working out on your own. The goal of a particular workout may be to do as many rounds of a sequence in a given amount of time, do a prescribed number of rounds of a sequence as fast as possible, or lift as much weight as possible. As a result, it can be a competitive atmosphere, yet at the same time a supportive one- people cheer each other on, encourage them to keep pushing, and generally work together towards the common goal of improving our health and fitness.

Of course, there are downsides.

Tuesday’s workout included rope climbing to the ceiling. Now I don’t know about you, but I have no idea when I last climbed a rope. Which means I forgot about technique, and about NOT sliding back down too fast.

That’s a 2″x3″ band-aid, and it’s not big enough to cover the friction burn I gave myself :-/

My class group is made up of a slightly older group, half of us are in our 40s, so physical training 3x a week takes a toll on the joints after a while. Thankfully for some (not me, I can take it ;-) ) we’ve added a pool workout once a week.  Since I wear contact lenses, I really needed to buy a pair of goggles, which I did on Tuesday evening.

The old worn out shoes that needed replacing…

I’m doing a fair amount of running as part of the physical training program that is integral to the course I’m here for.  I realized that my running shoes were probably a year old and had seen better days and my suspicion was confirmed when I tried on a new pair.  What a difference!

And the new sneakers look so much better too!

Some people have 2 left feet, I have 2 right shoes

Veronica is being a little naughtier that usual, not that I’m complaining ;-)

I’ve been slacking off lately, and it shows, at least to me.

I only had to go into the office for an hour or so this morning, so I took advantage of the time to get my ass back into the gym.  I need to do this more often…

I hope you’re all having a nice day and enjoying some holiday-related downtime, like I am.
