Dad Time

There has been quite a bit of dad time this weekend!

First, my dad and his longtime girlfriend came up to visit, arriving on Saturday afternoon, for an early Christmas celebration.  For a variety of reasons, mostly due to distance, we haven’t spent a Christmas day together in almost 20 years (he and my mom divorced 24 yrs ago, when I was 16), but we always find time close to Christmas to exchange gifts and spend some time together.  Unfortunately, his GF came with him.  She’s not a bad person, just a very simple one, and not much of conversationalist at all.  We told them “DB is spending the week after Christmas in Pittsburgh with my mom” and she replied “Oh, he’s going to Pittsburgh? For how long?”  Every exchange is like that, she repeats what you say in a way that implies she didn’t understand even the simplest of statements.

It’s more than that though.  While she will travel with my dad, you always get the impression she’d rather be at home.  When just my dad comes to visit, he’ll sleep here on the futon downstairs.  With her, they’ll stay at a local hotel, because that’s what she prefers.  Not only that, but they returned to the hotel around 8pm, then came back to the house around 10am to visit for another hour or so before heading back to NY.  That’s hours of time my dad missed with his grandkids.  I may joke and gripe about his presence inhibiting my online time, but in the end I’d rather he had the time with the kids.

Oh, a funny story I have to share!

If you were to pick up my Mac and open iPhoto, you wouldn’t find a single naked picture of me or anyone else in there.  I’m very careful to segregate the family-friendly from the not-so-family-friendly pictures.  Or so I thought…

I was showing him pictures from my trip to Orlando several weeks ago and there was not one but two suggestive pictures, my HNT from that week and the click-thru!  I quickly clicked past them and mumbled something about special treats for Veronica while I was away.  Then there were a few pictures from when I had dinner at Ivey Lane’s house.  That was easier, I just said she was an old friend of ours and he didn’t question it.  Whew, that was close!

After my dad and his gf left late Sunday morning (she couldn’t wait to get back home to sit around and do nothing), I had even more Dad time.  Earlier that morning Veronica left for a little overnight trip to NYC, just like she did around this time last year.  We were talking gift ideas several weeks ago and she mentioned that what  she really wanted was to repeat that trip, and I was more than happy to watch the kids while she visited the Big Apple.

The kids and I declared Sunday a pajama day and we spent the day inside. They had free reign to make a mess of the living room, we ordered pizza for dinner and generally had a great time hanging out together.  As much as Veronica is enjoying the city, I’m having just as much fun with the kids!

Though I am ready for her to come home Monday evening…

Time: 2:30 pm
Place: work

The kids have learned the Punch Buggy game and have gotten quite good at recognizing a Volkswagon on the road.  Or this one in the parking lot at work!  I had PP with me for my company’s Christmas party on Friday afternoon, as we were leaving she beat me to it and noticed that this car parked next to my truck.

We got home, showed her brother the picture, and she promptly punched him! :-)

The longer I’m away from home, the more I miss some things.  The other day Veronica commented that she misses the simple pleasure of sleeping next to me, listening to me breath and feeling my hand resting somewhere on her body.  It passed after a few minutes, and it certainly wasn’t her intention, but that little comment evoked a deep feeling of sadness that I really didn’t expect.

Yesterday MsTigerX texted me some pictures of the view from her porch, overlooking the yard.  Next thing I know, I’m thinking about my deck at home and the simple pleasure of sitting out back, watching with kids play in the yard.

In no particular order, other things I’m missing
- laying out on the hammock in the evening (see that header image above? You get the idea)
- tucking my kids into bed at night
- random acts of affection with Veronica throughout the day
- when my daughter climbs onto my lap for snuggles for no apparent reason
- date night with Veronica
- bike rides with my son
- taking the dog for a walk around the block with the kids
- feeling Veronica’s, well, everything
- home cooking
- our evening routine, kids in bed, Veronica and I relaxing together, finishing off the day with quality naked time
- and so much else.

8 more days and I’m on the road, 11 more days and I’m walking in the front door and into the arms of my family.

And there’s this too ;-)

Every time I webcam with Veronica and the kids, Princess Persistent asks me to move my laptop around so that I can show her what’s on my desk.  I think she just likes knowing that I have pictures of her and her brother on my desk to look at every day…

I sat back on the couch to watch Wipeout with the kids and they quickly joined me on the couch.
I love moments like these!

I got home around 7:30 Tuesday evening, kissed Veronica, and she immediately left to return to her office for a committee meeting.  As the kids prefer to do when mommy isn’t home at bedtime they crawled into bed together.  PP in true little sister fashion decided to imitate her brother and read for a few minutes.

Aren’t they cute?

Hey, get your minds out of the gutter, we’re talking about my daughter here! ;-)

I wasn’t the only one enjoying the beautiful weather on Saturday!

Sunday morning the kids got DB’s Lincoln Log set out and ask me to help them build something.
They played with them on-and-off all day long!

And she kicked me in the ass!

Today our submissive unicorn friend was supposed to come over for a couple of hours of nekkid fun.  Veronica had arranged for the day off from work and I was going to work a half day, but not requesting to have the time off ahead of time.  Instead, I was going to tell my boss that we had a sick kid at home, but Veronica had some work stuff she couldn’t cancel or miss, so I would have to be at home for half the day.

You know where this is going, right?

Princess Persistent really is home sick! Tuesday afternoon daycare calls Veronica to tell her that PP has spiked a fever and needs to go home.  Which means she won’t be allowed back for 24 hours, so we had to contact our friend and cancel.  Fortunately, she’s a mom too and understood and we hope to reschedule with her soon.

So much for celebrating hump day with 2 hot and sexy nekkid women :-/

To further irritate me [I'll admit, I was grumpy because of having to cancel with our friend], when I get to the day care center I find PP bundled up and headed outside with her classmates.  Let’s review a few facts, shall we?

  • She has a 101-point-something fever
  • They are sending her home ASAP and not allowing her back on Weds [per policy]
  • It’s about 35 degrees out and raining

Anyone else see why I was perturbed?  To the centers credit, they encourage at least some outside playtime every day, even if only for 15 minutes, and ask that kids have appropriate clothing to do so.  Plus, there is a 40′x40′ covered play area, so they weren’t necessarily going to be in the rain. So taking the kids outside is perfectly normal.

But our daughter is sick and I’m on the way to get her because they’re sending her home!  Why is she going outside in a cold rain?  If you follow me on Twitter, you might have seen the angry tweet I fired off when I left.  Veronica saw it and promptly called the director of the center.  Fortunately, not only is Veronica calmer than me when irritated [I tend to yell and cuss at people who piss me off, which isn't exactly productive, or so I'm told...], but she also used to work for the day care company in their corporate office.  If nothing else, Veronica has maintained a good relationship with her former boss aka the CEO of the company, and the center director knows that.  She was very apologetic and promised to have a word with PP’s teachers.

On the bright side, with no influence from us Darling Boy declared that he would like to donate some money from his piggy bank towards the relief efforts in Haiti.  Veronica is telling the story on her blog today.  I think it’ll make you smile, you should check it out!

Last spring I built the kids a swingset and I swear, it was the worst investment I ever made in the little buggers.  I swear, they never use the freakin’ thing.  Okay, I’m kidding.

If Veronica or I can’t find either of them, all we have to do is look in the yard and we’re sure to find them on the swings, on the climbing wall, going down the slide, playing in the fort, on the monkey bars…

Sometimes, you can even find me out there with them, getting in touch with my inner child

One of the kids will invariably say “Daddy, do the upside-down trick!”  Who am I to deny their request?

Veronica is doing some more housework this week.  Visit Osbasso to see who else is getting half-nekkid this week and of course there is The Other HNT for the NSFW variety of nekkidness.  I think you’ll recognize someone there today…

Happy Half-nekkid Thursday!!!!
