It’s always a pleasure to discover that a blogger friend you’d love to meet lives somewhere you’ll be passing through anyway.  Such was the case with Nashville and 13messages, along with Bella.  As soon as I could, I let them know when I’d be passing through and we made plans to meet for dinner.

13messages is as nice in person as you would expect from knowing him on-line.  And Bella, well she’s just yummy from head-to-toe AND a sweetheart.  The only downside to the evening was that their respective spouses could not join us.  I just hope that 13 and I didn’t bore her when he and I started talking photography technique!

After Bella dropped me off back at my hotel, I grabbed my camera and went for a walk.  One block to the west there’s a traffic circle (or rotary to some of you) with this statue as the centerpiece- nekkid people!

One block to the east of my hotel, there’s a strip club- more nekkid people!

And back in my hotel, there’s me- half-nekkid!

13messages and Bella, thanks for taking the time to meet, it really was a pleasure meeting both of you!

Thursday is going to be a long day, my waypoint for the night is my mom’s house in the Pittsburgh suburbs, so I have almost 600 miles of driving ahead of me.  Needless to say, I doubt I’ll be getting around to many of your HNTs until later Thursday night when I settle in at moms.

Veronica is playing this week too, though I have no idea what she pulled out of the archives.  But I do know that she’s always worth the visit :-)

Happy HNT!

Wednesday was going to be a short driving day, as I had firm plans to stop in Nashville for the night, see my HNT post today for more about that.  Since my route was taking me through Memphis, I decided to stop and see Graceland and also to find some BBQ, since Memphis is famous for that.

I ended up skipping the tour of Graceland, it was an hour wait for the next available tour AND it was $30 for the tour.  So I just walked around the area some and picked up a couple of souvenirs at one of the many gift shops.

The BBQ however, was FANTASTIC!  Thanks to M (some of you may remember her!) for the recommendation.

I hit the road from San Antonio around 10:00am and made really good time.
I reached the Texas-Arkansas border around dinner time, stopped for gas and food, and realized that I was on State Line Ave.

On the left side of the road, Texarkana Texas
On the right side of the road, Texarkana Arkansas

I kept going after that, I figured that I would drive until I got tired, which turned out to be near Little Rock.  Along the way, I noticed the color of the sky over my left shoulder and looked for a spot to stop and get a picture of the horizon.  Fortunately I found one before the sun set any further, unfortunately the power lines detract from the picture.  Oh well…

First thing on my agenda when I reached Dallas on Saturday was to have lunch with ShesTooMuch at Twisted Root burgers.  Fortunately the restaurant was literally down the street from the hotel Veronica and I stayed at 2 weeks ago, so I knew exactly where I was going!  After a delicious lunch, we walked down the street to a mural park I noticed on the way there so that I could take some pictures. (Click on any picture to view it full-sized in a new window)

We then decided to drive up to White Rock Lake and hang out there until she had to return home.  We spent another hour or so enjoying the perfect weather and the pleasure of each others company.  How about this view of the Dallas skyline?

After we parted ways, I spent some time exploring the area before meeting other friends for a night out in Ft Worth.  The whole reason for this little trip was to see theBsideOFme again.  Veronica and I met her and some others back in February when she was in Massachusetts and we had talked about getting together while I was down here.  It took 8 weeks, but we finally succeeded!  We were also joined by OnlyWhenI, big_dielSpecialK, PandaDementia and jstolle for dinner on the outdoor patio of a very good (and popular!) Mexican restaurant, followed by a night at a karaoke bar.

Panda can sing, that girl is good!!!  Unfortunately the same could not be said of some of the other bar patrons.  Though the pretty brunette at the table behind me was a pleasure to watch AND listen too!  We could have done without the crowd of drunk TCU idiots who showed up around midnight, but I didn’t let their antics spoil my fun.

Thanks to everyone I visited with yesterday, it was well worth the trip!!

Driving a truck, even with a cap on the back, presents some challenges when carrying valuable items on a long trip.  It’s not like I have a trunk to hide my personal and work computers in, not to mention my bike and other stuff that won’t fit in the cab!

At each stop along the way, I’ve tried to park my truck like this.  I firmly believe in better safe than sorry!

Surreal Radio

I’ve done a LOT of searching up and down the radio dial over the last several days.  Rock, Top 40, alternative, country, I’ve listened to it quite a variety in music.  Okay, maybe not country, but anyway…

Saturday afternoon somewhere in the vicinity of Montgomery, Alabama I hear Dance Hall Days by Wang Chung.  Remember them?  Kind of a catchy song, so due to a lack of options, I leave the song on.  The song ends and what do I hear?

Casey Kasem.

Casey Kasem, the host of American Top 40?  I had no idea that the show was still on the air or that he was still hosting it.  But Wang Chung? That was 1984 or something like that, what’s going on here?

Then he introduces the next song on the countdown- “and here she is with her latest hit, it’s Madonna and “Borderline”"

Now this is just weird.  The next song?  “Infatuation” by Rod Stewart.  Mind you, there has been NOTHING from the host station yet, I have no idea what I’m listening to, it’s like I’m in some time warp and I’m a pimply-faced socially awkward 8th grader all over again *shudder*.  Anyway, it’s strange enough that I pull over at a rest area and send out a few tweets.  The responses to my tweets were pretty amusing:

13Messages- I love that year in pop music. My formative years! :-)

brlatethanneve- that’s horrifying!

queenofpink- I’d be in heaven.  There is no music like it.  Instantly transports you back to where you were.

VeronicaASM- that is so awesome.

Now I’m getting curious and really want to know when this list is from, until finally I hear a mention of July 7th, 1984.  I was right about that year!  This list goes on, Deniece Williams, ZZ Top, Huey Lewis and the News, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Idol…

And then I lose the signal for the station!  Dammit, now I care, I want to know what the top 5 songs were for this week in 1984!

oh well, back to surfing the dial for a station I like.  But it was fun while it lasted!

That’s how I felt for a large part of Friday, for 530 miles of driving, all but about 35-40 of those miles on I-85…

Not bad for a blind shot out my windshield!

And once I got to Atlanta and went for a late-evening walk to stretch my legs.

I took a little more care with this shot!

On the bright side, my day started with meeting the wonderful SexyTigerX formerly CrystalGirl for breakfast.  You think she’s a sweetie online? You should meet her in person!

Saturday evening should provide me with some good photo opportunities- I’ll be stopping for the night in Baton Rouge, LA but plan on hitting N’awlins for a bit first.  I’ve been there 3 times since Hurricane Katrina but have never seen any of the areas that were so hard hit by the storm, so perhaps I’ll explore those areas, see how they’re looking almost 5 yrs later.

Anyone in that area wanna say hi? I’m 2-for-2 for days on the road and meeting friends, help me keep the streak alive!

In yesterday’s HNT post I mentioned the possibility of meeting some bloggers along the way to Texas, knowing full well that I already had plans to meet Minority Report for lunch.  She works pretty close to the route I would be taking, so I asked her to suggest some places to eat.

This is one of the places she suggested.  Based solely on the name, we HAD to eat there!

MR is a very pleasant young woman and it was entirely my pleasure to take a break from the seemingly endless drive yesterday and enjoy her company for a short while!

She wrote a blog entry about our lunch date as well, you can read it here.

Thanks MR, for an enjoyable lunch date!

==============================================================================

Driving to the diner, I was experiencing a sense of deja vu, like I had been there before.

And then I realized, I WAS there before!

Of all the places to suggest for lunch, the diner was literally down the street from the hotel that Veronica and I shacked up in for one night of fun and fucking with SwingerWife and her husband, almost 2 years ago!  Many of you probably don’t remember my old blogspot blog, and SwingerWife’s blog is long gone, but when Veronica and I were taking our first tentative baby steps into the swinging lifestyle, SW was our long-distance mentor and guide.  She and I have fallen out of touch, but being back in that area, seeing the hotel we stayed at and the restaurant where we had dinner brought back some pleasant memories.

Today, another 500 miles or so of driving and a night in Atlanta….

September 29, 1990, a Saturday night party in the basement apartment of this fine example of student housing, Veronica and I met.  We’ve literally been together as a couple ever since.  It was fun going back there and showing the kids around town and bringing them inside a few of the buildings where we spent the bulk of a our time as students.

Remember my Radio Days post from a month or so ago?  You know the one, Veronica joins me in the student radio station while I’m producing a remote broadcast of a football game and we decide to fuck in the record library?

Unfortunately the station no longer exists, but when it did the middle window on the 2nd floor was the broadcast studio and the window to the right of that was the record library.  Ahh memories :-)

I love that there are so many actual game items to be found here, but still, seeing some of them amazed me.  Here are about 10 of Hank Aaron’s home run balls, spanning career home runs 700-720, including the one he hit to tie Babe Ruth’s record!

Of course, no visit would be complete without some serious time spent in the Hall of Fame Plaque Gallery.  Here are the first 5 inductees, from the Class of ’36, Babe Ruth, Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and Walter Johnson.

Some items in the Hall of Fame are more whimsical than others, such as this handsome creature!  Click it for an explanation.  This display lead to random outbursts of “Holy Cow!” from Princess Persistent for the rest of the day!

=============================================================

Monday Veronica and I will be taking a trip down memory lane, as we drag the kids to the college town where she and I met almost 20 yrs ago.  We haven’t been back there since we passed thru on our way to friends wedding in 1997, so I’m really looking forward to it!
