Going to and from an appointment on Tuesday brought me past Walden Pond. On the way I noticed how still the water was so I decided to stop on my way back to shoot some photos.

It pays to have your camera with you at all times, you never know when inspiration will strike!

I’m spending Thursday and Friday at a conference in Providence, RI. It’s a good meeting, I first attended it in 1995, that was the first scientific conference of any kind I ever attended.  A nice perk of going to the meeting is that I actually have a shorter commute, it’s faster for me to drive from home to downtown Providence than to my office.

Thursday afternoon I took a break from the conference and wandered the area for a little bit, I liked this view of the state capital

It’s almost hard to believe that just a few days ago this area got several inches of snow, now it’s back to looking like a typically gorgeous New England fall.

A Friday afternoon walk around a local state park. The parking lot is empty, closed off for the season.
(I parked by the boat ramp, which is still open)

There’s not a soul around the picnic area

And there’s a hint of fall in the trees

Yeah, sunset pics are hardly original, but sometimes the sky looks sooo gorgeous I just can’t resist.
I swear, this is right out of the camera, no tricks in Photoshop to mess with the colors!

As my flight home to Boston was on final approach for landing, this was the view out my window. I had to break the rules and turn on my phone to get a photo, it was too good to pass up!

My hotel Monday night is in a really nice mixed office/retail area, the fountains are at the center of it and made for a nice place to wander around and walk off some of a delicious dinner with friends and colleagues.

The top of Mt Wachusett, that is.

Katie and I, along with her best friend Kelly, went for a hike yesterday evening to the 2006 ft summit of the mountain, which I believe is the highest in the state (yeah I know, 2000 ft is nothing). This is the view to the north, that’s basically southern New Hampshire that you’re looking at. I could also see the Boston skyline but from 40+ miles away with hazy skies the photo turned out like crap.

I alluded to this shot on Day 157 (there’s an advantage to being behind posting photos!)

Wednesday night there were some awesome thunderstorms off to the south and I was sitting out on the back deck watching the lightning show, camera in hand. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get a photo of lightning?

Fortunately my pea-sized brain managed to remember that my DSLR is also capable of recording video! Start recording and wait to see what happens. It only took 10 seconds before I had something good!

The downside is that I couldn’t figure out how to capture a still from a video, so I took the lazy way and grabbed a screen shot from the playback in QuickTime. A little grainy, but that’s okay

Tuesday morning I woke up (very early!) at home in the Boston suburbs.

Tuesday afternoon I was at 14,110 ft above sea level in the Rocky Mountains.  Pretty cool, huh?  And the scenery isn’t too bad either!
