You should have heard the noise this girl (guy? who knows…) made when DB got too close to the younger ones!

And I’ve learned another advantage of having a longer telephoto lens- you can take photos from further away and preserve your safety. No one wants to mess with a large, pissed off bird.

70-200 lens at 165 mm, 1/200 sec at f/2.8, ISO 800

The astute observer will notice the lack of ice and snow in this photograph, in contrast to damn near every other outdoor photograph I’ve posted in the last month.  I got up Friday morning and headed south to visit a friend, I’ll be heading home later today.  We spent some time walking around the riverfront area and we noticed this blue heron (that’s what she said it is) , so we waited so that I could get some pictures of it in flight.

105 mm macro lens, ISO 200, F/8, 1/60 sec

Time: 11:00 am
Place: riverside

Damn, I wish I used a faster shutter speed and lower f-stop, I would have gotten a sharper image.
Still, I like the bird’s reflection in the water

Or some kind of bird, I’m actually not sure what it was!

I was out running errands and half-thinking about something to shoot for today when I caught a glimpse of this bird.  I quickly parked and walked closer to where it was perched high in a tree, facing away from me.  I wanted to get a shot of it from the front, what I should of done was stayed put.  The ground was rocky and uneven, as I was watching where I was going the bird took off and I only got a couple of shots, this was the best of them.  Oh well…

Saturday afternoon I visited Brackenridge Park in San Antonio- I’ve passed the park many times but have never checked it out before.  I found a nice shady spot to sit by a creek and waited for inspiration to strike, fortunately there was no shortage of photo opportunities!

I like how I caught the ripples radiating out from when the duck dipped his (her?) head underwater for food.

I spied this one (a crane? damned if I know…) sitting here and figured that with it’s big wingspan that it would look pretty cool in flight.
So I waited.  And waited.  And waited…

While I was waiting for the crane or whatever it was, this pigeon landed nearby and I managed to get a decent shot of it flying away. Of course, with my bad luck I looked back at where the crane was and the fucker flew away while I was taking pictures of a pigeon :-/

I don’t have a clue what kind of bird this was, but I like the motion blur look I ended up with!

Friday afternoon I went for a walk along a path I discovered on a bike ride last weekend.  The path is several miles long and one of these days I’ll explore more of it on foot.  This time around I got lucky, I walked no more than 100 yds and I saw this doe and fawn.  There haven’t been many instances where I wished I had a longer lens on my camera, but this was one of them!  I tried to get a little closer but they bolted into the trees as soon as they saw me moving towards them.  Oh well, I still got a pretty good shot!

Rocky is a 28 1/2 yr old brown bear at the Pittsburgh Zoo.  We got to him at the same time a member of the zoo staff arrived to feed him.  Rocky walked over to the edge of his area and patiently waited for the woman to throw him fish, one at a time.  Look closely near the top of the picture and you can see the fish flying toward him!

At least I think it’s a dragonfly.  It looks like a dragonfly, doesn’t it?
[If you click to open it in a new window and zoom to 100%, check out the detail- I'm pretty damn impressed myself!]

No, this isn’t a post about Twitter!

Monday evening the kids and I were out in the yard when we spied a bird sitting on the grass.  I thought it was odd that the bird didn’t fly away, even when PP walked to within 8-10 feet of it.  She got a little closer and it flew to the fence, but it was immediately obvious that it was somehow injured.

Of course, my first thought was “oh cool, my first chance at some wildlife photography!” so I ran inside for my camera.  The bird let me get to within about 6 ft for this shot, then it flew further up into a tree.  I wonder if it’ll be okay….
